First Look At The CGI Smurf
I have absolutely no idea what to expect from the upcoming live action/CGI hybrid movie “Smurfs”. I mean… on the one hand I’m stoked to see it because… well… it’s the Smurfs, and who didn’t love the Smurfs? But on the other hand… it really is kind of a stupid idea. But who knows right?
Anyway, Coming Soon gives us a peek at what the CGi smurfs will look like. Pretty much exactly how they should look I guess.

So what do you think?

It is really stupid. I thought maybe the whole idea was a bit of a joke. Guess not.
I personally hope it bombs.
Why?
The image looks precisely like I would have expected a “live action” Smurf to look.
Not stupid at all. Not at all a joke.
Smurfs have been off the radar and syndication long enough that it is appropriate to reintroduce them to a new generation.
I still say Jeff Goldblum for Gargamel. Or John Lithgow.
john lithgow i like as gargamel but tobe honest fuck smurfs some shit should be left alone.
I do get that feeling sometimes.
nice! i wuv the smurfs!
ah, nostalgia.
Well, they could look better than that.
Also, the idea of the movie, a girl helping a smurf find his village is stupid. Why call it The Smurfs if it isn’t with all of them?
They look very plastic, like the little figurines I used to collect 20 years ago.
SMURFS!
It would make sense to have the movie relate to kids from the 80s in some major way… forget todays kidsm who have no idea what this was.
My God, the tagline is horrible!
Am I the only one who didn’t like the Smurfs? Don’t get me wrong it’s was a nice show. They were just creepy to me, but hey if the kids love god bless them. For some reason the Snorks didn’t creep me out…strange?

Also I wanted to ask what was up the smurfs opening. Why was it so depressing?
Stupid? Do you kick kittens and puppies? Its the god damn smurfs. Awesome!!!! Sure we can find out later that the story is terrible, but the image is perfect. And for my generation this was THE cartoon. Was there anything better than saturday morning cartoons? Before the cartoon network this was the only time cartoons were on tv. And the smurfs was the anchor tennant.
where the hell have u been…smurfs might have been loved by children for the short run it had but was not the anchor cartoon in all neighborhoods…u say awesome i say fucking retarded….whats next SNORKLES…..GET A LONG GANG….FUCK JUST MAKE A ELECTRIC COMPANY MOVIE AND HAVE KIDS THINKING WTF IS GOING ON…sorry but for me nostalgia is over with the release of every crap film that makes me laugh at my youth.
“smurfs might have been loved by children for the short run it had”
Short run? The show aired from 1981-1990… that’s damn near a decade. Not a lot of shows can boast that. Not to mention all the now collectible figurines, 26 comics created since their creation, a spot in the Ice Capades for a while, showed up as attractions in theme parks for a while, and so on and so forth. That’s more than just a short run.
The “Snorkles” I assume your referring to are actually called the “Snorks”. Even though I watched the Snorks as a kid, it never felt like anything more than a cheap rip off of the Smurfs. Though they were also shown on NBC via Hanna Barbara… outside of their four season they virtually did not exist compared to the Smurfs.
That model looks hideous. As somebody already stated, it looks like one of the old rubber/plastic toys from back in the day. I’d expect them to at least make the hat look like cloth and a proper crease where it is folded over. At least make the pants also look like separate entity from the rest of the body, rather than using a simple crease to imply it. Make the handset look more functional, as is (maybe from the angle) the thumbs look like a mere bump poking out of the side and the rest of the fingers look conjoined. It all worked for the cartoon because it was an animated series and back in the day it was all that was needed. Those minor tweaks can be fixed now, especially being in CG. They could do something really cool, but instead they create a model that somebody with little to nil training could have created in Blender.
That said, are they still planning for this to be a trilogy? I remember reading back in the day they were talking about some epic story to spread across the three movies to be compared to the LotR trilogy. Always sounded like they were shooting for the stars on that one.
Looks like a plastic figurine…since they’re going for a CGI hybrid, I hope they look a bit more ‘realistic’ than this on the screen.
I grew up on the smurfs and there’s a nice nostalgia there, but I can’t see this working unless it full on CGI / cartoon.
LOL, cool pic. Looks exactly the way a CGI Smurf should. I’m very glad they didn’t try to make them look like they could exist in the real world and instead keep it on a kids fictional level, ala the original cartoon show. I just hope it will be ALL CGI and not have a lame mix of live action actors in it, like the lame Garfield or Alvin and the Chipmunks movies.
I’m not too big on Smurfs myself, although I did watch them some as a kid. My girl friend on the other hand loves the Smurfs and has a bunch of the episodes on DVD. So I’m sure she and I are gonna have to go see this next year.
It was confirmed as a mix CGI / Live action…that’s why it worries me that it looks like a plastic figurine.
oh gawd sounds bad
It may look exactly what a CGI-Smurf would look like, but that don’t change that it looks as if it could’ve been done by any nerd familiar with 3D-image editors…
I will smurf my way to the theater to see it! :)
No. Why? The Chipmunks may have stayed the same (aside from doing rap and hip-hop) but the characters of the Smurfs will NOT interest people today. Bad idea. One of those bad ideas you think about late at night with a group of friends joking about.
I wish they could do the “Lord of the Rings” style Smurfs from that one video long ago.
“Peter Jackson’s Smurfs” LOL
Smurfarific!
The poster is very uninspired. But the design looks spot on, very close to the original comics.
They should make Smurfette hotter. Put her in a bikini.
I can’t wait to see this film.
Where’s my Fraggle Rock movie???
i never really watchd the smurfs as a kid ive seen a couple episodes, and for gargemel, id have to go with Rowan Atkinson on this one
Very happy about this movie. I introduced my kids to the original cartoon and now they’re really excited to see this.
Most people on here aren’t too thrilled, but that’s to be expected as the target audience will be kids and few of whom post here.
