Vacation Movies to Pass the Torch to Rusty

Looks like Vacation is the next franchise to get a shot in the arm as they gear up to bring us the Next Generation of family vacation comedy films. The propsed idea is still in the works but looks to have Rusty Griswald all grown up with a family of his own learning it wasn’t easy to plan a vacation.

CinemaBlend says:

the film
will focus on Clark Griswold’s son Rusty, now all grown up and with a family of his own. Rusty, following in his father’s stumbling footsteps, attempts a family road trip vacation of his own.

There’s no script yet, the studio is meeting with writers, but they’re locked in on that as the film’s premise. The idea is to have both Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo appear in the film as grandparents and they’d reference the previous movies, to maintain a consistent continuity. If it works, I look forward to seeing a sequel in which Rusty’s attempts his own Christmas Vacation, with Chevy Chase as one of the visiting (and mostly annoying) grandparents and Randy Quaid as the still unemployed Second Cousin Eddie.

The Vacation films were all campy awesome comdey. Chevy Chase at his prime.

But this won’t be a National Lampoon film, so while they are attempting to keep some continuity, it will likely have a completely different feel. Which is good because as much as I love those old Vacation films, the style of comedy may not catch on so easily in this era. Adapting it with a broader appeal could reinvigorate the next generation of Vacation films.

But who will play Rusty?

Johnny Galecki (Big Bang Theory) was Rusty in Christmas Vacation, Jason Lively was Rusty in European Vacation (but hasnt worked since 93), and Anthony Michael Hall was the Original Rusty in the first Vacation.

I vote Hall.

  1. Middleman has a point. While there could be offers to Embry or Hall, not one actor in the Vacation series has reprised the role.

I see new actor. Who I can’t say. Could be Jamie Kennedy?

However, if Hall takes it, I would think he would be less bumbling and the role be written more straight man, if you will. In fact, that would be the way to go. All the family members are still bananas, and he is the only sane one, slowly being driven insane. It can’t be the same old thing over and over again.

Besides, after the first Vacation, only Christmas Vacation equaled it in laughs.

  2. I’d just do a remake of the first one. Vince Vaughn would make a decent next gen Clark Griswald.

If they have to make it a Rusty, they MUST cast someone different in every one. No one has ever played Rusty twice. It was be sacrilege to break that trend!

  3. I find it interesting that they would put a priority on maintaining “a consistent continuity” when they had 4 different Rusty’s and Audrey’s of all different ages. A Vacation movie doesn’t really have to have continuity, but it would be great to see Chase and D’Angelo in their roles.

  4. I think Embry could play it similar to Chase’s Clark. Hall’s a good actor, but he’s so rough looking now. I don’t see him as the loving but bumbling father.

  5. Plus, from the original article in CinemaBlend, to “maintain a consistent continuity…”

…is that redundnant? Should they have just written to maintain continuity?

Sorry – I know that’s a little anal retentive, but really, get a grip on the English Language!

    1. Agreed. I thought Vegas Vacation was pretty good. Kind of reminded me of the old school Vacation movies in a more modern setting. Thought it worked out really well. And Ethan Embry made a hilarious rusty.

And I would like to say I never realized who that was playing rusting in Christmas Vacation! I always thought of him as one of the boyfriends from Roseanne. Love Big Bang Theory!
