I’m not saying he should quit the thing that he’s known for. I’m just saying that it’s getting really stale. I hope he ventures out into new creative avenues.

Personally I think that “pseudo-Gothic expressionism” is a perfect fit for an Alice movie. Would you be OK with this movie if it looked exactly as it does but had been directed by somebody else? Or would you then be knocking on somebody for trying to rip off his style?

There are honestly only two existing ventures I would love to see through Burton’s eyes. Alice is one of them, and that will is on its way. The other would be the Wizard of Oz.

I do agree that he should venture out a bit, as I did love Big Fish, but I would not want him to give up all together on what you call his repetitive and safe expressionism.

If anything, I’d like him to do some original stories in the future, rather than re-imaginings.

He’s become one-note and resting on his conventions. What he does is no longer challenging or even unique. His pseudo-Gothic expressionism has become repetitive and safe. His best films, Ed Wood and Big Fish, are major deviations from his usual style.

Again Gunther, the Cheshire cat is often portrayed as nothing but a floating head, so its not a cliche in this case.

The floating photoshopped head trend in posters is a cliche, but in this case it works because thats what the character is.

The cheshire cat turns invisible when he smiles, which very specifically is described as a phasing process that starts at the tips of his toes and the tip of his tail slowly fading until all that remains is his smile.

Why? He does what he does well. Why on earth should he go make a romantic comedy or a political drama, just for the sake of doing something “new”.

It’s obviously meant to be a sort of ‘montage’ photo, since all of these characters are from different places and scenes.

Despite the fact Alice is the main character, she’s also the least interesting to put on a poster, since she’s just a normal human. What the movie is “about” are all the strange places and characters Alice comes across in Wonderland. THAT is what you put on the posters.

Can’t wait to see this film. Burton and Wonderland will be a perfect mix.

I would think the floating cat head is the least odd about the poster since the cat has been represented as a floating head in every Alice movie. I find it hard NOT to think of the cat without thinking of his seperate from body head that bounces around and is the last solid body part followed by his smile in the disney version.
