New Moon Advanced Ticket Sales Dethrone Star Wars
Twilight doesn’t have the kind of die hard fanboys who would camp out on a sidewalk waiting to buy tickets, but that mostly has to do with the internet offering advanced sales online. And those online sales have just surpassed the previous record holder Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith sucking up the grand majority of the business for advanced ticket agent Fandango.
And today, the balance of power has shifted entirely– Deadline Hollywood is reporting that New Moon has sold the most advance tickets in Fandango’s history, surpassing Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It’s currently accounting for 86% of sales on the site, which is as much due to the massive appeal of the film as the fact that there’s nothing else out right now.
I think that the lack of competition for tickets is a big bonus for them, but this also means that 2012’s big windfall will have a significant drop this following weekend.
They couldn’t have released it at a better time. The fanbase is still rabid, and the movie fans are slowly coming around even though they don’t want to admit it. I even hear friends who were previously blind haters of the franchise seeing the trailer and reluctantly admitting that the action looks good.
Twilight doesn’t have to be your cup of tea, but this would be a great weekend to see ANYTHING else if you didn’t want to wait in line. New Moon is trending to hit $100m this weekend, which means other films? Won’t.

“The fanbase is still rabid, and the movie fans are slowly coming around even though they don’t want to admit it.”- lol Rodney.
I quite liked the first one, so I’ll give it a shot.
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of nerds suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
hahaha
You have expressed my sentiments exactly… Just a whole lot better than I ever could.
Sure I’m a girl and I like Twilight, but it dethroning Star Wars in anything… Just makes me sad
It makes me happy =]
I just kissed my cat in celebration.
What a sad, sad day for the craft of film.
Was “Revenge of the Sith” really more of a deserving film to hold this record? These types of records are always held by films that pander to a very large audience and are generally
despised by pockets of other people because they’re shocked and confused by why so many people even like it (I’m not shocked, I understand why they like it, I just don’t myself). People like bold statements whether they’re over-glorified or apocalyptic, they’re both exciting. Guess what though? “The Dark Knight” didn’t trigger some golden age of blockbusters and “Twilight” will not send the film medium into the dark ages. Hollywood has been the way it’s been for a very long time, so if this is a “sad, sad, day” to you, then it’s been a pretty sad 25-30 years for “the craft of film”.
I hated the first one in every single aspect, comon twilight fans.. you want some come get some!!! arrrrrhhhhh (thats my battle cry)
“Twilight doesn’t have the kind of die hard fanboys who would camp out on a sidewalk waiting to buy tickets”
I’m sorry- WHAT!?
It definitely has the fan-girls.
I really freaking hope so.
Although both comments had absolutely no hint of being jokes, no “lol”s or “haha”s
Which leads me to think theyre serious. Which is sad.
Im hoping their next comment says nothing less then: “Haha! Im joking, im not really a Nazi, hehe”
It’s cool I was just tryin to make a point on how ignorant Justin is. I’m going to see New Moon w/ my girlfriend at the midnight showing :)
Still cant get myself to watch the first, I’m kinda getting annoyed at all this “New Moon-Twighlight” stuff. then again I’m not a 13 yr old girl either.
Just dont get the hype.
sorry
Lord help us all.
Proudly bought tickets for me, my daughter and five of her friends for Friday night. Granted none of us walked away from Twilight saying it was a good movie, but as fans of the books we’ll give New Moon its chance…especially considering how much better it looks.
The end has come.
Yeah I wouldn’t stand in line for Corny Dialouge, Terrible Acting, Crappy Special Effects and Soppy Teen Romance. Well damn the next one comes out in June 2010! I’m so Sick of this twilight shit!
Uh,…. so don’t go see them?
No one is making you endure the books or the movies. You don’t have to.
Relax.
It not about that. You just can’t avoid all the goddamn media propaganda surrounding it. You’d have to live in an igloo in Alaska for a year in order to do that! I am also getting sick of it: Twilight this, Twilight that! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
shhh you…this is about star wars not twilight…no one will remember twilight in 20 years!!! long live the force!
What’s up with there being no thumbnail on the home page?
Its part of a plan Darek. Patience grasshopper.
I like this look.
Fuck.
I was 99% sure The Dark Knight held this record (maybe it was just the midnight box office record overall – not the advance online ticket sales one, though)
Nothing like waking up to the local news and seems like the 1st thing you hear about is either this New Moon shite or American Idol.
good thing I dont work for the post office.
That’s pretty crazy. The internet defiintely played a huge factor towards this accomplishment.
If there was a new Stars Wars trilogy coming out, I bet it would come out being on top again.
