New Moon sets New Midnight Release Record

It will be no surprise when Twilight Saga’s New Moon will be #1 at the Boxoffice this weekend already setting records in Fanadango online ticket pre-order sales, but early reports are now saying that a new Midnight Release record has been set, toppling the previous record held by Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince earlier this year.

LA Times reports:

Two people close to the picture said the exact gross, which is still being calculated by Summit Entertainment, could be as high as $26 million.

Update (10:45 AM): Summit’s official estimate for midnight ticket sales is $26.27 million. Its official estimate for the gross of the original “Twilight” last night is $1.3 million.

The craze seems to have blossomed since the first film came out, enforcing that even though Twilight novels were already a hit, that the feature film put it on the map dragging in droves of new fans. Fans apparently eager to catch the new installment of the insanely popular franchise.

Reveiws are rolling in positive for the movie, and I expect there will be records set this weekend.

    Currently 30% at Rotten Tomatoes.

    • Rodney says:

Rotten Tomatoes has proven to be the most inconsistent rating system ever.

As its popularity grew, its ratings became too random. It used to be a good tool but now its just a troll stomping ground where films get bashed by people who probably didn’t even see it.

That being said it has a 65% in its Community Rating. Proving that rating (as the relevance of that site) has little value.

      • James (Haz) says:

I have never in my life agreed more with Rodney.

I will take it to another level though Rod, and point out that its extremely flawed.

        Ugh. Hate RTs.

Its really fun to go to and I LOVE visiting that site… but i hate it when people take that site so seriously and respect the tomatoemeter system as if it was the epitome of credibility.

      • Monty says:

Even the Cream of the Crop reviews stand at 38%, either way that hardly justifies the “Reveiws are rolling in positive for the movie” comment, unless you want to be clear about it being reviews by Twilight fans.

      • James (Haz) says:

Oh no im not trying to defend New Moon AT ALL.

Im just agreeing with Rodneys POV on RT

      • Matt S says:

I agree, it’s very flawed, but isn’t this the same blog that gets all giddy when a Pixar film is the best reviewed film of the year on Rotten Tomatoes? Also, the “it’s the best reviewed movie of the year and it didn’t win “Best Picture” arguement seems to be the most common point used when we have the “Academy doesn’t respect animation” debate (James, I think you’ve used the arguement before as well, maybe I’m rememberring wrong).

Like I said, I’m agreeing with you two, Rotten Tomatoes is hugely flawed, but it’s gotta go both ways. It’s still a flawed system, even if it happens to be leaning in the favor of your specific arguement. Something to think about.

      • SlashBeast says:

        There’s definitely a double standard.

  2. Corey says:

I was looking forward to this film because book 2 is by far my favorite. I saw it last and I must say it was worse than the first one. The acting was horrible and incredibly cheesy. The best looking shot in the film was the festival in Italy. I know I am over analyzing it but I was let down.

Oh well at least in 2 hours I am off to see Star Wars in Concert … CAN’T WAIT!!!!

  3. meli says:

It appears their marketing of the werewolves and more action has brought more people to this movie. I’m looking forward to checking it out tonight with the kiddo and her friends.

  4. Reuben Agboola says:

Literally just this last hour come home from the cinema after seeing this.

Didn’t really expect much going in to see it, came out thinking that meh, it wasn’t TOO bad. Little overlong for my liking. The acting was indeed incredibly cheesy, and I came out with impression that Kristen Stewart’s character certainly is a glutton for punishment, hehe.

But hey, it’s certainly not the WORST film I’ve seen this week (2012, anyone?)

    • Rodney says:

2012 has been getting far more positive reviews than New Moon thus far.

      • Reuben Agboola says:

Yeah, I’ve been seeing the reviews for 2012, and each to their own, I say. Some will like it, some will not. I went into the theatre with an open mind, and came out of the opinion that I didn’t like it.

Having said that, some people WILL like it. Nothing wrong with that. I just enjoyed New Moon slightly better.

  5. SlashBeast says:

A sure sign of the end times.

  6. Will the GMan says:

Reviews by critics? Or reviews by fans? You should specify…I’m going to assume you meant fans, because its getting slaughtered by all the critics I am reading…

    • CSGabriel says:

haha agreed. Haven’t read one positive thing from a critic. Well I did read one but I didn’t know if he was joking the entire time in the article or not.

  7. AARON says:

It was good. The majority of it dragged out and felt waaay longer than 2 Hrs. 10 Mins. But the last 30 mins of it or so-saved the film for me. Otherwise i would’ve said it was ok.

  8. James (Haz) says:

For people talking about the reviews:

Rotten Tomatoes is a flawed system (heavily flawed). Just because this has a 30 doesnt mean jack.
G.I. Joe had a 91% at first as well.

Never trust any reviews, go see it yourself or trust your own judgement from the trailer.

If you think the movie looks bad and youre not going to see it, good. But dont let anyone’s review change your POV on a movie.
Everyone has moves they love but everyone else hates.

    • David Lopan says:

I couldn’t help but laugh everytime a film show would say “now, let’s check out this exciting clip from new moon!” and it’s the transformation scene into a werewolf that looks nearly just as cartoon-ish as the Fantastic Mr. fox…I’m not surprised it’s going to make the #1 box office…

    • James (Haz) says:

      David.

I know its hard to catch on- but Twilight is ACTUALLY a romance. Its not an action movie. The fact that it has little violence is a plus.

If you order a burger and it comes with a fun size snickers bar, dont complain that its a bad desert, be happy that your lunch has some fucking candy!

      • David Lopan says:

I saw the first one James. I know what the story is about…hell, I’m surrounded by people who read the books. Still doesn’t change the fact that I think it looks cheesy and silly. That’s all. I didn’t expect it to be an action packed epic.

      • James (Haz) says:

If you dont want to see it because you personlly believe that its cheesy and or bad, then good.

Its good to say it looks silly, i just dont like it when people say “New Moon is a bad action movie”

      • David Lopan says:

I back tracked to see if I mentioned it being an action movie…but I didn’t. Don’t know why you’re putting words in my mouth when all I commented on was how silly the computer effects on the wolf transformation was.

      • James (Haz) says:

You implied New Moon has weak action.

Just because a BLOG says that New Moon has amazing action does NOT make New Moon an action movie.

They can say ‘Watch this explosive action scene from New Moon”
ALL IT IS is Jacob potecting Bella from Paul

The New Moon crew NEVER implied New Moon was an action movie, they did say the action would be increased… but never that it would be epic. They never advertise their movies with action, they advertise the movie with Edward and Jacob.

So if you see a blog saying ‘BEST ACTION SCENE EVER” dont laugh at Twilight for saying that, laugh at the blog for their opinion.

      • David Lopan says:

Again, not once did I say explosive or action, nor did I imply that I thought the film was action. I simply commented on the transformation and how it made me laugh since I thought it looked goofy. This is becoming circular reasoning…

  9. 420BAND says:

Well, I for one dont let a review stop me from seeing a flick. But this New Moon stuff is not my bag, I didn’t watch the first one and so this one I could’nt care less. My wife liked the 1st one though, The media buzz turned me off on this, every friggin’ second with these teenie boppers without shirts fighting over the skank from Zathura
and cheesy wolf transformations. and I’m supposed to buy in? sorry.

    Just one dude’s opinion

  10. Matt S says:

Well, good for Summit, I guess. This little book series is making them a goddamn powerhouse.

Hey Rodney, so will you be handling the “New Moon” review, or will John be gracing us with his presence, or what? Seems like we’re a little behind on the reviews. What was the last one? Astroboy??? Dunno. Just curious.

  11. Dragonslayer says:

I’ve decided not to see it.

  12. Tim "Cloverfield" says:

I have heard that Twi-Lite New Moon has received Negative star ratings. Never thought that was possible until Observe and Report. Even my die hard step daughter said it was not as good as the first film….and she is a bloody fan. What has the craft of film making become. I for one am anxious to read MB’s review. I think the fate of the World could ride on it. At least the fans of the film, and the fans of MB. I do think the end is near, now more than ever.

  13. Justin says:

My advice to Jacob and the Wolf Pack: TAKE A BATH HIPPIE!

  14. cloud720 says:

Does anyone know if this is a fair count? I know Dark Knight started at midnight, but there have been times when a movie will start at 10 or 8 pm the night before. If that happened with New Moon and they are counting that towards Mid-Night sales then it wouldnt be a fair competition.

    • Rodney says:

It is only the sales from Midnight and before morning. That’s what Midnight releases are.

Films that open on Thursday or Wednesday to bolster that first week result are not counted towards this. That isn’t a midnight opening.

New Moon opened on Friday. The Midnight release had people in line on Thursday but still only released on Friday.

      • cloud720 says:

But didn’t Star Trek open at 7pm nationwide? Doesn’t really count as a full day if the movie only starts playing at 7 pm, but also isnt midnight. What would you call that opening? Is there a record for 7pm openings?

I wasn’t sure how the tally works but if New Moon started at midnight I guess it doesnt really matter.

      • Rodney says:

A film’s opening weekend counts all boxoffice take from a whole weekend regardless of when it is released (the midnight showing numbers will be added to the total weekend draw)

A Friday release is for any film that opened on Friday and that number is just “Opening weekend” (In my area, there were afternoon showings of Trek too) But this isn’t baseball. There are not stats for every film that opened on every hour of every day.

        Biggest 3:15 opening ever!! lol

But they do differentiate between a few things like biggest for a season, biggest 5-day opening, biggest holiday weekend opening etc. Just to keep the comparisons fair.

  15. Dragonslayer says:

Will their be a review for this movie?

  16. nbakid2000 says:

Claiming the record for the biggest one-day gross, The Twilight Saga: New Moon raked in an estimated $72.7 million on approximately 8,500 screens at 4,024 sites. The Dark Knight was the previous title holder with $67.2 million on around 9,300 screens at 4,366 sites.

  17. 420BAND says:

WOW…….Guess teenage soap drama is the new thing

  18. Jim says:

I liked this movie despite the fact that I’m not a 13 year old girl. Certainly better than quite a few other movies I’ve seen this year, including disappointments like Transformers and Terminator.

In fact I liked it almost as much as Whip It.

    • bernardg says:

Dude, Whip it is so much fun! much so than New Moon. Pretty much one of the most underrated movie of the year… I saw New Moon to much of my chagrin (my gf dragged me into it etc….), and after seeing it, I was thinking that I’m better off seeing Trueblood (pretty ironic, being it’s a tv series).
BTW: I didn’t get watch Twilight either and still don’t want to….

  19. Guide says:

It’s quite good actually… better than the first one at least..

  20. meli says:

New Moon was so much better than Twilight honestly the acting, the look and feel and the effects were steps above and Weitz had some good camera shots as well. The pacing is slow, much like the book, but on a whole it was a good adaption. I don’t think a lot of people who aren’t fans will enjoy this movie it’s definitely made for the fan base, which is a flaw until you look at the BO numbers and think…hmm…sure it’s not a movie for all audiences but it makes the cash. LoL
All I know is my kid’s dad came along to help with the gaggle of teens and was pretty bored.

    • AARON says:

For the record about the acting, I thought Kristen Stewart did a way better job this time around.

Lautner was good but some of his lines were delivered bad.

      Pattinson was good.

Rodney-Is this site ever going to have a New Moon review!? Like i’m just curious is all.

  21. Yamo says:

A Twilight T-shirt $15….Two New Moon tickets $25….Popcorn and Pepsi $20….The BJ you know you’re getting after the movie Priceless.

  22. Vic De Zen says:

The amount of movie/attention/records this movie is getting is ridiculous! I guess this shows that power of a teen driven market.

  23. Dragonslayer says:

Okay, I don’t like the franchise, but didn’t you learn from your comment about “Harry Potter being for retarded kids”? What you just said was insulting. I may not like the series, but I’ve never said that the people who like the film are “gay.” Don’t judge the film before you’ve seen it.

Seriously, you need to cut it out. You don’t here us criticizing what you like.

  24. Rodney says:

While normally I just delete any of Algore’s posts because he is nothing but a troll, this one I am going to let stand.

Thank you Dragon for stating what needs to be said to this punk. He continually posts on this site just trying to bash and hate for the sake of insulting someone.

Its not productive, and all it illustrates is how petty he is.

You will see less of him on here. Either we will continue to remove his trollposts, or he will grow a spine and realize that this pointless trolling earns him nothing.

  25. Ifaz says:

Don’t be fucking dumb. Say some relevant stuff.

  26. Rodney says:

He can’t. This is his game.

He would rather insult himself in his effort to troll.

  27. Dragonslayer says:

    You’re welcome Rodney.

I see comments like this all the time, especially on Youtube. People say crap on the internet that they would never say in real life just because they think it adds inches to their dicks. It needs to stop because someone may take it to seriously. They say actions speak louder than words, but words still hurt.
