Must be a great time to be a young adult novel writer as it seems to be the new gold mine for films. Get your book series on the New York Times Bestseller list and it also gets on the radar for studios to make a movie out of it.
The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare is next up.
For those unfamiliar with The Mortal Instruments, here’s a quick blurb from the Variety article: “Story revolves around teenager Clary Fray’s search for her missing mother, which leads her to a city filled with mysterious fairies, raucous warlocks, vampires and other demons.” Collectively, The Mortal Instruments series of books have spent 28 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers List.
Of course this is not the first time a book has been made into a movie, but ever since Harry Potter and Twilight after that, the books that target the young adult and teens are being taken a lot more seriously.
The first three books of Clare’s book series will be the source of the film which is a modern take on a fairy tale world existing in paralell with our own.
It sounds like an interesting concept, and I look forward to seeing what they do with it. Will be interesting to see if the fourth book is enough to justify a sequel since the first three are making up the first planned film.

Great news. I just read the first book a few months ago, still need to read the other two, and it was quite entertaining. It will be interesting to see how they bring this adaptation to life on film.
By the way, I find it interesting, if it is true, that they are using all three books to make the first movie. Seamed like there was plenty of story in the first book to make a movie all its own.
The twist at the end of the first book is awful. I hope they leave that part out.
I really enjoy those films that employ the idea of another ‘realm’ just under the surface of our world. I might actually be excited for this one.
I’m surprised Artemis Fowl hasn’t been made into a film yet, or the Charlie Bone series.
Id wager a book series revolving around a ruthless greedy criminal mastermind is hardly the role model that studios would want to make into a film aimed at teens and young adults.
Though I am curious to see what Eoin Colfer does now that he has been working on the 6th (of the Trilogy) Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy book.
I read the 6th of the trilogy…..and it works as an independent Eoin Colfer novel, but not as a Hitch Hiker’s Guide :-(
Though I admit, I wanna see Artemis Fowl on screen, it’s one of my all-time favorite series…..
Have any of you heard of the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud? I wonder why THOSE haven’t been signed on, those are just TOO freakin’ awesome for words! Perfectly awesome for ALL ages!

I personaly agree when you say there was plenty of story in the first book to make a move however there were (ALOT) of loose ends at the end of book one and for those whom havnt read the books, watchinh the movie would just piss them of as you would then have to wait at least 12 months to see the next part of the story on that note note however a mini series would be interesting to see as there are alot of twists in the story to keep an audiance interested.
