The Wolfman facing a Re-Edit

I have been looking forward to seeing The Wolfman for a while now. Originally I didn’t care much, but as I see and hear more and more about it, I want to see the final product.

However the “final” product is not happening just yet as those in charge have taken a look at the cut and had to admit it was a mess. So Editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch have been called in to give it a different cut.

Obsessed with Film overreacts:

Emergency editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch have been brought on board to fix the meandering mess of a movie is the final nail in the coffin for Universal’s tentpole.

Actually, the final nail was when the project was delayed for a third time. This latest news, which has happened after several expensive re-shoots, re-cut trailers and the letting go of a high-wage composer who had provided a whole complete score and paying for a completely new one from another guy, well it feels like it’s an afterthought at the wake.

I am of two minds when it comes to news of this type.

When I hear that someone has been fired from a film, or someone else has been brought in to “fix” the film, my first instict is the reaction above. The film is in trouble.

But in reality once sanity returns, you realize that in fact this might be a bullet dodged. Perhaps they recognized that something just wasn’t working. The Score, an actor, bad trailer, poster, whatever. And bringing someone in to fix it might do just that.

Fix it.

Of course the road to hell is paved with good intentions and it might be able to be saved.

I am still looking forward to it, whenever it finally does come out.

  1. Well this could go either way. Yeah, re-editing it could make a mediocre film better but a re-edit could also actually make a decent movie bad depending on how much creative input non-creatives (like suits) have in the process.

  2. I read somewhere the opening shot of the original score had the song “Werewolf in London” sampled in a Kid Rock song none the less……… and the Suits took a shit!

  3. I just read the whole article and it’s freaking stupid. The way these dumbasses react just makes me wanna slam my head against the keyboard. This quote just says it all:

“Benicio Del Toro’s dream of playing The Wolf Man, his favorite movie as a child, has been ruined by Universal’s complete mis-handling of the project.”

Really? Since when do you know? You haven’t even seen the final cut of the film yet, so how is it ruined? Stupid assholes

  4. Well, at least the trailer was open enough to be able to accommodate a different edit.

That’s a hell of a lot of visual effects work done already though – it’d be a shame to trash some of it or shell out for even more additional visual effects shots.

  5. Re-cutting the movie, as Rodney said, isn’t always a bad thing. It could be that the current version of the movie is a mess and they’ll fix that. The way I look at these things is if the final product is good, then I don’t give a shit about any behind the scenes drama that took place before-hand.

  6. Oh, COME ON!
I’ve been waiting for this damn movie for… what’s it been? Two years? Two years of “it’s coming out!… no, wait a minute, nevermind.”
I can forgive the wait as long as it brings forth all the good stuff I’ve seen in the trailers. Anyone else think it odd that only NOW do they say “We need to change this”?
If it really is just STORY issues, I can forgive that too. They want to make the plot-line more visible in between the killings and transformations, and whatnot. But if Universal ends up turning this thing into a total sh*t-fest over a few useless details, I will be severely pissed.
And another thing; shouldn’t the DIRECTOR maybe have an eye on what’s going on in front of his cameras? Isn’t it his JOB to deliver a solid product? Either Johnston’s incompetent or the studio is a cesspool of morons. I’m leaning towards the latter, but is anyone else just a tad bit nervous that this guy will be helming Captain America?

  7. I don’t think the question is if this film will flop, but how hard it is going to flop.

The latest trailer was boring IMHO. The trailer is supposed to get one excited about the film, and sadly, can be better than the film if cut right.

That trailer was so boring it pretty much killed any interest I had.

  8. Lets just pray they do it justice.. So the whole music score was scraped? did not know that.

again like you said Rod, lets just hope this just a perfectionist who love Wolfman and want’s it just right…

  9. I’m really trying to stay positive because I am looking forward to this movie and I really want it to be good. I think it looks beautiful in the trailers. Still, I can’t deny I’m worried between the delays, the firing of Elfman and now a re-edit. Granted they could all be for the positive, but when does it come to the point of over tinkering? I wonder…is this a product of director incompetence or studio interference?

  10. I was looking forward to this film just because the atmosphere that seems to be present, and so rare in modern films. Reminds me of one of the old school horror movies.

This has be a bit concerned, especially since I’ve already more or less lost my faith in the industry.

  11. Didn’t they re-film scenes in X-Men origins and said that Deadpool scenes were added?

that final product had deadpool for seemed like 5 minutes in the whole film (and fucked his look all up).

    this cant be good!

    1. I agree that there is no guarantee that a re-edit will be a guaranteed fix, but it seems like they were not happy with what they were getting and were then re-editing hoping to make it better.

The intention is there, but just because one film did re-edits that you didn’t like doesn’t mean all re-edits are a certain failure.

Maybe Wolverine was even WORSE before the edits. You don’t know.

      1. Yeah, the last movie I remember them bringing in an emergency editor for was “G.I. Joe” and yes, Rodney may be right, “Wolverine” may have been worse originally, same with “G.I. Joe”, but they were both still the two most laughably shitty movies of the summer in my opinion (whoops forgot “Salvation” too)

The first trailer for “Wolfman” was pretty darn good, but the second trailer with it’s wannabe “Underworld” vibe, then dropping Elfman for the “Underworld” composer, and now calling in emergency editors has lowered my hopes almost completely.

        Oh well, fingers crossed.

  12. O.K the first trailer that was shown at Comic Con was really awesome and got me real hyped……then they realesed the latest one we see now and it worried me a little. now this? WTF is going on?

I really like Benicio and know he’s gonna own this but editing over and over is not a good thing after a while you lose sight..

HOPE THEY DONT FUCK THIS UP!
