This is It takes in $101million Worldwide
Michael Jackson’s concert tour turned feature concert film had its release this past weekend and we have the official numbers of the international boxoffice take.
Sony Pictures Releasing today announced that since its release on Wednesday, October 28, Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT has stormed straight to the top of the UK box office taking an incredible £4.9 million. With the UK figure contributing to a worldwide total of $101 million and counting, it makes motion picture history as the highest-grossing concert film of all time.
Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT is the 5th biggest international opening of 2009. In addition to the UK, top grossing territories include: Japan $10.4 m (3rd biggest opening of the year in Japan), Germany $6.3 m, France $5.8 m, Australia $3.6 m, China $3.2 m, Italy $2.9 m, and Spain $2.6 m, among others.
Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT opened to #1 in North America with $21.3 million for the 3-day weekend, averaging an estimated $6,119 per screen.
The title of highest-grossing concert film of all time is a limited accolade as I haven’t seen too many feature film releases of concerts. Its a limited feild of competitors. However no matter what people think of those two artists, you cannot deny that Michael Jackson has a bigger career, and top that off with his untimely death, I am not surprised that its getting as much attention as it is.
I am waiting for the DVD release, but I still want to see this.

It’s very odd to me. I’ve never been much of a fan of Michael Jackson, but recognize his contributions to the history of music. Most definitely not fan of the way he presented himself for the past decade or so, but damned if after seeing the trailer for this at a movie recently did it make me want to go see it. Anybody here see it? How was it?
Amafuckingzing…..
Really, just go check it out, whether or not you’re his fan…..
I wish I could go see it. I’ll probably wait for the blu-ray release.
Too many other movies i’m more into seeing before this. If it gets a longer release time then I’ll go see it. Within 2 weeks though, I can’t see it with all the other movies I wanna see in theaters right now.
I wonder if folks at Sony decide to extend the film’s life and let it play out a normal run (the film supposedly has a limited 2wk run before being pulled)
While the majority of the film (as I understand it) is composed of rehearsal footage, it is truly the last glimpse of the last days of a talented musical genius and a good person overall. Some of the film has gotten criticism that there isn’t much “downside” in the rehearsals. At first I wondered about that too, but then it dawned on me that what possible “negative” footage could there really be? They are doing mostly rehearsals, working on dance moves and the like. Nothing “serious” went wrong during the filming of the footage I’m sure.
This film was put together for Jackson’s fans and music fans in general.
Wrong! It was supposed to be for his own private library of videos–he wanted to keep the footage of his last ever tour…..
…..which is why a lotta people’re complaining about the shaky and obviously amateur-handled camera–this was never meant for theatrical release, it was just a home video, you know.
Wrong! This footage was not a casual home video. The footage was gathered by a documentary filmmaker for the purposes of having a behind the scenes documentary of his last tour ever.
Not home video – Documentary.
The Doc footage was then turned over to a director who made a concert tape out of the deal.
“Home video” was too literal a description! I meant that it was for him and him alone–at least that’s what I read on other places.
However, that sounds very traitor-ish of me…..and, therefore, I concede defeat :-S
Down here in New Zealand they’ve extended its release by another 2 weeks. Don’t know if that’s happening anywhere else. I assumed they extended it because they couldn’t get the Christmas release they wanted.
I saw it.
Amazing…no words really.
I’d go see it in theatres. I saw it last night and its great. See it in theatres.
oh brother….
I think the movie is great.
Wow, that’s a lot of money! I just saw this film recently and it was great! It’s definitely worth checking out!
