Deadpool Movie Gets Green Light

I wasn’t a huge fan of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but I didn’t dislike it either. I can tell you one of my favorite aspects of the film was Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool (at least in the beginning of the movie). Even before the movie came out a lot of people had been speculating that there may be a Deadpool solo movie down the road. Yeah well… an $88 million dollar opening weekend for Wolverine seems to have accelerated those plans because official word has come out that a Ryan Reynolds Deadpool movie is moving forward.

The folks at SplashPage give us this:

MTV News has received official word that there is also a “Deadpool” solo movie in active development, with “Wolverine” actor Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Wade Wilson, Marvel’s mutant assassin. According to a source close to Fox, the “Deadpool” spin-off film will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel, and will be “a complete exploration of this unique character — his origins, his emergence as the Merc with the Mouth.” The studio is currently seeking writers for the project.

I’m not going to lie to you folks… I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this news. I was completely entertained every minute that Wade Wilson (Deadpool) was on the screen in Wolverine, and an entire movie focused on this character makes my heart all warm and fuzzy.

No idea what sort of story line they’ll go with or what other characters they’ll have involved… but at this point I really don’t care. I personally think this is great news. Your thoughts?

  1. Look, the only way they can do it right is if they release it under the marvel knights studios title (like punisher: warzone). But I still say they need some more experience. Knights should be marvel’s grindhouse studio; give us a Luke Cage/Iron Fist black-splotation/kung-fu film, an inhumans epic, and a ghost rider film where he’s actually in hell (you know, one that would be worth seeing and not just cool to look at?).

and Screw wade’s origin story. not every first marvel movie has to be a gorram origin story. Just show him killing and cracking jokes at moral gray spots. Thats what deadpool is all about, baby.

  2. Deadpool is a anti heroe yes. However unlike Batman or Spawn he is Actually different.

Making a spin off of deadpool is a awesome idea and Ryan Reynolds would be the best actor i can think of for the Spot.

HOWEVER,After seeing wolverine and enjoying it up until Deadpool shot beams of energy out of his eyes like cyclops made me rethink the whole movie.

Deadpool does have regeneration.Yes he can teleport with a device.Yes he is awesome and one of my favorite Marvel characters but making him able to absorb abilities is kinda weak. Its almost like they(Marvel)Are trying to steal some of “Heroes” thunder with a Sylar or Peter remake.

Leave deadpool true to the comics And dont try and fix something that isn’t broken is my opinion.

  3. So it is being produced by Marvel and not Fox?

Could mean a very good thing. Marvel has done right by movie adaptations of they’re characters so far. This could turn out to be the way Deadpool should have been…

  4. This SOUNDS like a good idea. SOUNDS. I honestly don’t think we can have a movie about a heartless assassin whose certifiable. I love the character, but I just don’t think his own movie would attract many people. The Punisher is easier to make the main character because he believes what he does is right; he’s not insane, he’s just driven. Deadpool is nuts. Plain an simple. Years of fatherly abuse, plus a dead love interest, plus years as a science experiment for a nutjob who lobotomized his best friend will do that to a person.

As for the 4th Wall, we’ve done that before. Anyone remember Spider-Man? Narration much? Deadpool could narrate at some points, and look into the camera every now and then.

And storyline: Opens with a flashback when he fails his last official mission (before Weapon X), killing one of his partner Slayback. Fast-forward. After Weapon X, his body rejects all the implants (with help from the healing factor, and I suppose we have no choice but to ignore the adamantium skeleton). He is sent to The Hospice, where all failed experiments go. After being severely f***ed up there by the psychotic scientists, he kills them and escapes, becoming the Deadpool we know and love, using craziness & the mask to hide all the pain and suffering he has endured throughout his life (it’s true). He goes out, becoming one of the World’s top assassins, but the revived Slayback comes to seek revenge by capturing the woman he loves, and his new friend Weasel. “Well, time to save the damsels in distress, kill the bad guy, again, and end this with a bang. Time for an awesome gear-up montage!”
    Hello Hollywood? Anyone listening?

  5. If they just disregarded all the Weapon XI bullshit and go with the Wade Wilson character from the first part of Origins then I’m sold. He was definitely my favorite part of the entire movie and Reynolds did a great job with the character in the brief screen time that he had.

  6. I see a lot of you talking of how overpowered they made Deadpool, Weapon XI, in the end. Well, you know what happened in the end?

That massive damage he took strains his Regeneration Factor so much he loses all of those extra quirks that were added and we’re left with good’ol Deadpool.

At least, that’s the word around the water cooler.

  7. Is Ryan Reynolds going to play Deadpool?

Because Scott Adkins played weapon x deadpool and Reynolds played Wade Wilson…..So will Scott play Deadpool or what?

    1. As I said above, I think there could be room for both actors. In the first 5-10 minutes it will be Scott Adkins. Once Deadpool gets his “face” back (and voice) it’ll be Reynolds for the rest of the film.

Unless Reynolds turns it down, and the film is produced for under 50 million. Then it’s Adkins all the way.

    2. I say have his face fucked up, his face changes and now they can use Reynolds as an excuse to change it back from Scott

The only reason they used Adkins is because hes a martial artist…but his eyes actually looked like Ryan…his expression sorta had that sarcastic Reynolds vibe about it

    3. screw adkins. I have this image in my head of reynolds walking off the set of origins because they changed deadpool. And after being told to screw themselves, they just got adkins to fill the part.

Reynolds is a true fan of the character which is really rare in comic movies. But if for some reason he can’t do it i think Adam Baldwin (Jayne from firefly, agaent Casey from Chuck) would be perfect for deadpool/wade.

  8. This movie won’t have a budget more than 55 million. Take that in written. Fox is going to make a cheap spin off but frankly speaking I don’t think Deadpool spinoff requires more than 60 million.

  9. Reynolds was perfectly cast for this, heck i was hoping for a night stalkers spin off, but then i heard he was playing the merc with the mouth, and I was like “Screw that, gimme some of this!” I love Deadpool!
The XM:O was disappointing, but as said its made a rake load of cash, and Hugh Jackman wont be able to sleep for ages partying with all that monies!
Just give me a script that stays somewhat true to the comic, would love to see Cable hunt him down, hell give it Synder, it would be a close as you as anything then lol!
Like what you said “robertwolf” that could work! But surely he’d have to go insane at whats happened, hunt down Wolvy and SabreOMFGHOWMUCHDIDYOUSUCKtooth, and the nerf PG swords wouldn’t hack it!
Either way id love it to happen id pay to see it and buy the dvd. Reynolds is the perfect choice! Just gimme the right director and script, but if this fails at least do the night stalkers script lol!

  10. I would love a Deadpool movie. Reynolds is perfect casting.

Problem is, the same people who fucked him up before are going to fuck him up again. Give him the right script and a director who actually cares and this movie could end up being more fun than Iron Man. He could do for Deadpool what Downey did for Stark, but it won’t happen, unfortunately.

  11. Write Comment here. Before you do, review these rules:Hey everybody. Good, bad, indifferent X-men origins is making a boatload of money and I’m sure Hugh Jackman is crying all the way to the bank! And they are might even make a sequel! So just get off the movie’s jock, because guess what it is just a movie!! And I think it’s tight that they will spinoff Deadpools character. Gambit should get something more too.
    1) Stay on topic
    2) Disagree and debate, but no insulting other commenters or the author
    3) off topic messages for the author should be emailed directly, not left as a comment.

  12. Here is my idea. Wade has cancer so he enters Weapon XI believing that Stryker is going to cure him, but as we know, Wilson gets a few powers added on and his mind is taken over. After Wade puts his head back on(he did this in the comics), the Wolverine DNA messes up leaving him scarred, thus putting the famous costume on. What do you think?

  13. Hey John. I don’t know if I agree with you. I love the character of Deadpool and have read some of his comics, but my problem is just how overpowered they made his character at the end of the film. He has a ton of powers now which he didn’t have in the comics, so who are you really going to pin him against.

  14. NO breaking the 4th wall which even in a comic book comes off so stupid. More Ryan Reynolds as Hanibal uhm I mean Wade Wilson. It will be a PG flick so replace his swords with Nerf bats since they will be as useless as Wolverines claws in the movies.

    1. It will be a PG flick so replace his swords with Nerf bats since they will be as useless as Wolverines claws in the movies.

      That’s so true.

    1. The problem with having Cable in the movie is his back story. He’s too tied to the Xmen, being Scott’s son and all. How do you explain that in one movie and without having other Xmen in the movie. Trust me, if they put cable in the movie everyone will be complaing about how wrong they handled him.

    2. Thats a great point.

But know this; the x men movies IMO have been excellent movies…all 4 of them (even 3) but they’ve been HORRIBLE comic book movies….theyre so off from the comic books its sad…I wont get into it but they already ruined so many characters and their stories

So im guessing that they should just make this movie like 20 years ahead of X3 with deadpool still alive and Cable being Scotts unknown son that no one knows about and have him fight him AND wolverine (HOLY TITS was wolverine vs deadpool an awesome comic book!!) also have Kane in it

Syrin should be in it too AND Weasel too because hes like Deadpools only friend

Also since hes not Deadpool yet, they should take him to The Work Shop, which is were he goes RIGHT after he fails in weapon x (which is the end of the x men origins wolverine movie)and they should do the whole torturing thing and then take him to The Dead Pool…were hell be the leader of the deadpool and he can fall in love with dead and do whatever he can to die so he can meet “her”

THATS when he trully becomes THE Deadpool….after he goes insane in THE dead pool and being the Dead Pool leader and he becomes insane (also driving all the deadpool members insane)

The movie should be called “The Dead Pool” after the deadpool itself…and then have wade call himself Deadpool after he starts getting surgeries and killing for money

This wolverine origins Wade Wilson was only the weapon x version…I want to see the version after weapon x…the one that controls himself without a sewed mouth..the one that joins the Hell House

OMG this movie will fucking rule

Also they should have Gambit paying Deadpool not to fight him….I read this comic book were hes an X Men for a little and he was going to fight Gambit but Gambit said
“No, ill pay you…fighting you is suicide”

      That was the BEST!! xD

And no sumo wrestling! Thats the only thing i dont like about deadpool, he was a sumo wrestler…and hes the BIGGEST women beater….hes worse then The Comedian when it comes to beating women

    3. *You never saw Cyke “die” (why would his death be treated so lightly?)

*Cable’s mother is the Jean Grey clone Madeline Pryor.

So, this leaves a possibility open for a future film involving such a situation. Better yet, there’s one thing we seem to forget:

In the films, Juggernaut is not Xavier’s brother. So while I’d love Cable’s origin to be intact, it isn’t a 100% requirement. One could make a point that in order for him to exist in a X film, Cyke and Pryor have to exist together at some point. But my view is will it be the essence of a character? That’s the most important thing.

    4. And to adress your
“we never saw Cyclops die” statement:

If i were the king of the world…I would have all the XMen die in the movies and leave out only wolverine so that when the rights go to Marvel they can have wolvie being an avenger…liek int he comix…they all die and only wolverine is left so he joins the avengers

I know it sucks to see Storm and Nightcrawler die but Marvel has litteraly killed every one of its characters (and brought them back)

Sometimes marvel gets sloppy….like there was a period when Thor only showed up in funerals lol.

And when they killed IronMan in civil war…and then when they LITTERALY killed him in that war machine book were he tells Rodey to avenge him

I hate it when MARVEL is talking about (for example) Pheonix in a comic book…then all of a sudden they completely change subjects “Hey collosus is back” and im like “WTF!? What happened to the phoenix?!” and then you keep reading and they say something like “the phoenix has been dead” “WTF!!!! when was this? You should have told me she died! I was reading about her!” they do that shit so much…

  15. YES, YES, YES!!! I would love a Deadpool movie. Ryan Reynolds, one of the greatest actors alive right now, was criminally underused in this movie. More Deadpool, and more Ryan Reynolds!

  16. we will see how many of these promised sequels and spin offs actually reach the screens once wolverine has a fucking massive drop this weekend……its going to be huge

  17. JOYOUS DAY! I agree John, throughly entertaining every second he was on the screen.

Side Note: No mention of Star Trek having a 100% rating on RT with 32 reviews?

  18. i dont like a character breaking the 4th but any other means is ok, i dont like being unimersed.

love ur ideas darren J, especially retaining some of weapon XI

    1. I personally think regardless of who the writer(s) are that will be a given, since, given the events of XO: Wolverine, Deadpool/Wade Wilson has to “revert” at least a short bit. It would also make sense for him to be hunted/blamed for a death or two, because that’s an excuse to bring in Cable, whose back story is “a mystery”.

For the fans of the 4th wall, there could be a video camera which he could mug for. (maybe I could stomach a line where he says “Don’t call me ‘King’ or uses an alias of ‘King’)

  19. I stand by my previous comment from the previous post.

    * supporting character named Weasel (although character is more like what Mircrochip was to Punisher)

    * NOT breaking a fourth wall (I’m sorry, I am SO against this in the X-Men movie universe)

*That they keep the Weapon XI Deadpool, but either he finds a way to “make the corrections” (an optic blast to heat his adamantium) or that his healing factor “reverses” at least half of the Weapon XI attributes. His new “face” is his old face.

*While I’d like the character(s) to be in other future X-Men films, I’d be fine with Cable and/or X-Force “tracking” Deadpool down, who is both a (possible) mutant threat and/or Stryker pointed the finger of murder on him. (In addition, maybe Danny Huston as Stryker briefly shows up?)

*As much as I would wish it, I am yet unsold, unrepped and unproduced. They will NOT talk to me until Hell Freezes Over.

    1. Weasel better be in it

Although I 100% agree with you, were the only 2 people that I know that are against the 4th wall bullshit

He cant stay as the weapon x wade wilson, he HAS to go to the DeadPool and to the work shop…and his face did change in the comic books but they dont have to change it in the movie, but im sure he will because they need to use Ryan Reynolds as the actor this time and itll look a little different if they use him…

No more Stryker…X-Men has done too much Stryker and Magneeto…theres much cooler villains in the X-Men universe

And they better make him say

      “BONSAIII!!!!!”

      “Sknit me!!”
      and

“I want my lawyer! I want my mommy! I want my lawyers mommy…”

  20. I love the x-men franchise but as of late it has gone down hill to a degree and I think its because the wrong people are making theses films. Brett Ratner ruined X-Men: The Last Stand or should I say Bryan Singer for making a “bad” decision to direct Superman Returns. Now there is Gavin Hood “ruining” Wolverine/Weapon X origin story with X-men Origins: Wolverine which is just under par compared to X-Men: The Last Stand. So for be to be excited for any other X-men film is going to take a lot of encouragement. I not really sure if I am ready for Woverine 2, X-Men Origins: Magneto, X-Men Origins: Deadpool, or X-Men: First Class. Out of list Deadpool would be at the top of my list because his character was done very well in X-men Origins: Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds was perfectly cast…I am not going to lie “Deadpool” (Weapon XI) was a horrible idea…so yes some redemption needs to set into motion for the X-men franchise

  21. I was pleasantly surprised with both Ryan Reynolds and the whole movie in general. I wasn’t expecting much but I’d like to see more of deadpool, he made me laugh.

  22. As long as he breaks the 4th wall im cool with it. thats something I never want to happen in a movie, but in this case it’s a must.

  23. The writing for Deadpool in origins was kinda bad, but I loved Ryan Reynolds sarcasm for the role. I would like to quote one of his lines from the movie which had me in stitches but I know Spoilers drive people crazy so I’ll pass on that.

I am in for a Deadpool film, whats the hold up? start filming it already!

    1. Unfortunately, perfect casting doesn’t equal good movie. The way these movies seem to be going then they try to cram as many characters as possible and in the end it takes away from the actual story. Personally, I think Wade Wilson was perfect but Deadpool was a huge fumble.

Things necessary to make this good:

      1) Remove some of Deadpools powers. Arm-swords? Laser Eyes? He’s not the ultimate mutant, he’s the ultimate ninja assassin so give him a sword and let him go to town.

      2) Unstich his mouth. Obviously they’ll do that because Wade Wilson/Ryan Reynolds is all about talking too much.

      3) No Cameos. I hated that they put Cyclops in the commercials for Wolverine but in the theater I realized why. There was an audible reaction of non-geeks when he appeared because it somehow makes them not feel left out. Well Deadpool is far from being a “team player” so leave Prof X, Magneto or whoever out of this.

      4) Ease up on the CGI. Deadpool should be all action and all stunts. None of this CGI crap that they filled Wolverine with.

      5) Kill the love story. Seriously, does the motivation of every hero have to revolve around chicks? Action Action Action.

      6) Deadpool isn’t a goodguy. There’s no moral or life lesson to be learned. He has a fanbase because he’s bad and he’s badass.

    2. He already got his mouth back at the end of Wolverine.

Deadpool isn’t good or bad he simply loves killing people lol.

If CGI is done well I don’t see a problem.

    3. Deadpool is only bad after weapon x when he goes to the Dead Pool before he becomes deadpool and when he beats the shit out of his ex gf….but she was an asshole and I would have done the same thing in the DeadPool…they were torturing him for failing the Weapon X mission

Hes good after that, I mean he kills people if theres money involved but only if theyre bad

He even joins the X Men

    4. Re: #6, Hollywood has shown that they can’t do this 3 times with the Punisher. Anti-heroes or villains or whatever you want to call them shouldn’t be made into movies because “they” feel it’s necessary to make them likeable and cram them into a more audience-friendly story arc. I don’t know the deadpool story at all, but I really agree with your hope that they don’t sanitize him.
