The analysts that track trends, and market response huddled in a dark room crunching numbers and drawing pentagrams on the floor and shaking magic 8 balls have predicted that this weekend’s 4 day opening of Star Trek could reach $65Million. The scary part that I didnt even realize is that if it did hit that it would not only be the biggest opening weekend for a Star Trek film, but it would also be a good lead on the TOTAL of the Top 5 openings of the 10 other Star Trek films.
ALL-TIME TOP 5 OPENING DAYS FOR STAR TREK MOVIES
1. Star Trek: First Contact (1996) – $13M
2. Star Trek: Generations (1994) – $9.7M
3. Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) – $9.5M
4. Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) – $7.7M
5. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) – $7M
I am always surprised by the boxoffice draw considering how devoted the fanbase is. But despite this devotion, it lacks population. The days when “Trekkie or Trekker” are gone like the Greasers and Jocks. They had their place in their time, but now they are just dated and sadly “uncool” Not that the classification was ever accused of being cool, but at least on some level you could respect their devotion even if they creeped you out.
But this film is making its best attempts to draw in a new audience to attempt to recapture what has passed into something new and fresh, and from all accounts I am hearing this is a new and exciting time for Star Trek.
Personally I can’t wait.
How can this be? This movie has received more rave reviews and more publicity than ANY SCI-FI FILM OF THE PAST FORTY YEARS. And they’re only projecting a 65 million opening? That’s nuts. I heard advance ticket sales for this were already outselling where Wolverine was this time last week.
I am very interested how well this one will play aborad. Historically, Trek has not been that popular overseas, but this one is attempting to play to international audiences.
65 million seems low these days.
just saw it and if it opens smaller then the awful xmen origins:jackmans desperation there is truly no justice.
it is superior on every single ;level
Interesting.. But weren’t ticket prices at least 50% less expensive back in the 90s?
damn you federal reserve!!!!!
tru dat, go to take inflation into account.

give or take.
I think this has the potential to reach 80 million this weekend.
Very good movie, better then first contact, but The Wrath of Khan is still the best, 7.5/10 from me :) :) :)
I have consulted the whiskers on Commander Riker’s beard and tapped into the wisdom of Sarek and they have spoken: 844 Million opening weekend.
It will happen. The beard has spoken.
I will take that bet.
You (and Riker’s beard) are wrong.
Imax on Saturday, Imax on Saturday, Imax on Saturday!
C’mon then folks, who has already seen it? Is it worth me bouncing around my bedroom in excitment?
John went to see it last night. The answer is YES!
He is changing his pants as we speak.
I also saw it last night. 8.5/10 and I am no Trekkie. IT FUCKING OWNED MY ASS. OWNED IT.
You’re a trekkie now honey. There’s no going back.
Well, I am now. Wasn’t before. That’s what I meant. The movie is fucking amazing, man.
I am by no means a trekkie, saw it last night. Blew my mind, best movie of 2009! Going to see it again in IMAX this weekend!!!
I’m looking forward to catching a showing on Saturday…not super hyped like I feel I should be, but I guess I’m just keeping a few reservations in place until I can experience the movie.
With Wolverine doing $85 last weekend and nothing really opening this weekend against Star Trek, I would not be surprised if this does over $100 Million this weekend (4 day total) since Wolverine will probably have a massive drop in sales
82 mil
Considering Wolverine opened at %85 million last weekend it rare when a film a week later beats a big opening like that. Star Trek should have real legs while Wolverine will drop like a rock. Why-It’s pretty bad.
chuck
Man. It sure would have good jump on them if those weren’t listing for opening day totals and not you know weekends?
But wow they have all done HORRIBLE opening weekends, good article Rodney
where’s an article??
What article Lars.. you are reading one.
I still say 75, looking forward to the movie
Hip, hip hooray! Can’t wait… Let’s hope ST makes enough money to warrant another film.
I have been a fan since a kid and consider myself a Trekkie, but I have never been to a Trek event nor do I dress up. Oh, and I don’t live in my mom’s basement. And that getting laid bit is not true either. LOL!
