George Lucas interviewed on The Daily Show

Thought this was a great interview by Jon Stewart. Lucas basically says “It’s a movie, get over it, it’s fiction.” Stewart’s reactions are hilarious.

“My son’s favorite movie is the Phantom Menace” And I have explained to him “No it’s not!”

    1. We are not the ones CREATING the videos or their source.

Also, Brock did this post and he is from the US, and while I am Canadian, I am the sole holder of that title here.

John is no longer with the Movie Blog.

  1. Hey, it doesn’t matter which movie was better – because you probably paid to see all of them, and/or you bought the VHS and/or DVDs! That’s really all that matters to Lucas.

And let’s face it, even the worst Star Wars film had some pretty cool special effects for its time!

  2. Phantom Menace was too kiddie oriented in some spots. the overall Idea was fine w/ Anakin as a kid and what-not. Jar Jar was a big issue with me..(terrible)I guess they wanted some comic relief to fill in the void of C3po and Han Solo..My big beef IS not even giving some Han Solo fans a spec of info or glimpse in the entire New Trilogy..(just something!)

Hard to say hate cause it was cool just seeing this universe again Years later…The various ships they had looked way too advanced for them to be older spacecrafts then the original…

Haden fucked it up w/ wooden acting.
and as he being what the movie was all around THAT REALLY SUCKED!

Revenge was awesome cause we FINALLY saw the Darth Vader transformation and CHEWIE! so all us original trilogy people got what we wanted to see.
too bad it was not from the start and just the last one…

  3. I watched the OT first and prefer ROTJ over ESB. However, my favorite movie, not by much over ROTJ is in fact ROTS. As far as memories go, the best were with Ep 4 cause I was so young when I first saw it. Got it on VHS in ’97, can’t remember why or who told me to buy it, but something inside made me do it and I can’t remember what. My love of films was clinched from that moment on. I don’t know if anyone will ever be as close to mimicking their wildest immagination, with so much depth and variation for a vast concept, as Lucas and the wonderfull universe he put on film and other media.

  4. One thing I have to say from watching it last night, I had the distinct impression that George Lucas actually *likes* Jar Jar Binks. While that’s a pretty horrifying thought, it also makes me feel a little better, because maybe he really did make the movie he wanted after all. That’s better than thinking he just made the movie he thought would make the most money, by overly kiddifying it. That said, none of this changes the fact that George Lucas *needs* to turn over future movie development, etc. to someone other than George Lucas, who’s capable of making a movie that can be enjoyed by everyone, in the same spirit of the original trilogy.

  5. I am part of that first generation that loved the original trilogy and hated the prequels. My main thing about the prequels was the casting of Hayden Christiansen, I know hate is a strong word so I’ll say I disliked him with every fiber of my being.

I know the first prequel did not have Hayden so I actually can watch that movie every now and then without going into rage, its just not a great movie in my mind. Its the other two that I dislike, I have only watched them once and will never see them again.

  6. Lucas created a vast universe and interesting mythology behind it. But Everything he himself did within that universe is shit. All of the really great Star Wars material are not by Lucas. The Prequels are inferior pieces of film making. Some people enjoy them because they are a part of the Star Wars universe they love, not because they are actually good movies. The Clone Wars cartoons (not TV series) were better than the prequels. Hell, the Star Wars video games have better stories than the prequels.

Kudos to Lucas for setting the table, but let others do the cooking please.

  7. im part of that second generation lucas was talking about, because of the hype of episode 1 in ’99 i discovered star wars & i prefer the original trilogy

maybe if i had watched episode one before ever watching the originals…

  8. I’m always in the minority for this. But I thought THX-1138 was excellent and a great peek at what he’s truly capable of. I wish he would stop doing so much star wars and keep creating. I loved American Graffiti and THX.

    1. agree, he used to be great and inventive creator/director, with his earlier movies (like those two you just mentioned it). Message to GL: I know Star Wars is your golden cow, but stop milking it already, it’s been more that decades. The cow getting thin of overmilking :P

      1. I’m glad someone else feels the same way (finally!) Everytime I get near this thought in a discussion people look at me as if I killed their first born. I think he’s done way better things than Star Wars, but that’s just me.

      2. I too agree. It’s interesting that the studio completely screwed Lucas when it came to THX, a film which he was very passionate about. I think he described it as them “cutting the fingers off his baby”. He took it really hard and I honestly think that from that point on he didn’t want to make anything personal, or that he truly cares about, because he couldn’t go through that again. Which would make sense of the rather strange incident in the 70’s when Coppola essentially stole “Apocalypse Now” away from Lucas (a pet project that GL worked extensively on durring preproduction) but he didn’t do so much as to lift a finger to stop it.

It’s a shame, he seems very talented.

  9. lol@ Stewart geeking out.

Lucas seems like a very interesting person to just have a conversation with, talking about things other than Star Wars. Can’t wait for Red Tails

    1. What was wrong with the prequels? In no particular order:

      Cheesy/bad dialgoue.
      Kid Anakin.
      Hayden Christainsen.
      Jar Jar Binks
      Too much exlaining (ie “mitichloreans”)
Amazingly stupid breaks with the original trilogy’s canon (this is probably more of a problem for fans of the original trilogy, BUT the movie shouldn’t have made such stupid mistakes to begin with).

There were certainly some good things about the prequels, but on the whole, there’s too much bad in them to even compare to the greatness of the original trilogy.

    2. I don’t hate the prequels but I have no desire to watch them again. If I’m in a Star Wars mood I rather pop any one of the original trilogy into my DVD player.
