A new Judd Apatow comedy is coming our way in the form of Bridesmaids. And surprisingly it looks like backbencher Kristen Wiig is being given her chance to hold up the film in a leading role.
After quality supporting roles in KNOCKED UP, WHIP IT and EXTRACT, Wiig will get her first starring role in BRIDESMAIDS, a Universal comedy about two women competing to plan their best friends wedding. While that logline makes it sound some cheap BRIDE WARS spinoff, with Apatow and Wiig involved, you can expect there’ll be much more to it than that. Apatow, Wiig and Universal are in talks with James Bobin, co-creator of “Flight of the Conchords” to direct the film
Now we mention below that Bobin is also being tapped for the upcoming Muppet movie, so I don’t know if there will be a conflict here. It all depends on when they plan on doing this.
I was never a fan of Kristen Wiig. I like what she has done on SNL, and while she is good in supporting bits her comedy gets tired on me really fast. Its good stuff, but after the gag is done she wears thin.
Having said that, she was my favourite supporting actress in Whip It! and I was shocked at how genuine and warm she was in that. This just made me a million times more curious to see what she could do in a lead role.
Just a guess, but I bet that Leslie Mann gets to be the Bride. Just sayin.
