Riddick goes back to Basics

News hit a few days back that Vin Diesel would be returning to his Riddick character in a new movie revolving around the most wanted man in a distopian future universe.

But what direction would they take the character? Well we get an idea on just that today…

io9 says

Though billed as a back-to-basics approach to the character popularized by Diesel, the script features the character — the most wanted man in the galaxy — left for dead on a barren alien planet, dealing with “trisons” (three-legged bisons) and “mud demons.” He must then contend with two squads of bounty hunters, one of which ride rockets called jetcycles.

So unlike the evolutionary tale that took a Barbarian Nomad to become a conquering king, Riddick’s tale will be going back to what made the franchise a success to begin with… a single adventure tale with an interesting anti-hero with a tiny soft side.

Sounds like the same formula that brought him back to the Fast and Furious franchise. Back to basics.

That worked out well for him there. I hope this equates to success for him for Riddick as well.

  1. i think its cool that they do this. besides they need to show more on why this guy is the most badass, most wanted man in the ..galaxy. thats a lot of people we are talking here! lol so it needs more action and a solid story to go with it, and i say we gonna have a kick ass sci-fi flick.

  2. haha this is funny cause pitch black made like no money at the box office….so what success was gained from ridick? they made the second film after he was getting a name for himself and wanted to capitolize on it.

  3. I’m worried about this direction to be honest. He was already left for dead on a planet pursued by bounty hunters. It was the first 15 minutes of COR!

I was disappointed to see them finish up the plot arc of the story in COR too quickly. They should have drug out the plot a bit more and made it a satisfying trilogy.

I loved the world they showed a glimpse of in the first two movies and now I’d like to see the rest of it. Other planets, other alien races, other characters. Give me a fully realized world like Dune or Star Wars and not these cheap little sagas where it’s all about Riddick. He can kill people, he’s really good at it, his eyes glow. I’ve seen it before.

Hoping for more, but expecting less.

  4. That’s really good. I like this franchise, but I was a bit worried that they were going to ditch the more sci-fi side of it that they starting in Chronicles of Riddick. They seem to be incorporating both themes here.

  5. This might be an interesting approach. It doesn’t have to be a direct sequel, just another tale of Riddick kicking ass and taking names with those glowy eyes. Kind of like the video games “Escape from Butcher Bay”. That seems more fitting for the “Chronicles of Riddick” franchise.

  6. I think allot of movies seem to escalate there plot to the point of which the movie’s meaning is diluted leaving the viewer confused. I feel the Riddick Movie had always had blockbuster potencial .
