Whedon “This Close” to Directing The Avengers

What started out as rumour on April Fool’s Day was confirmed as true. Joss Whedon was on the shortlist to direct The Avengers.

Then later it was confirmed that Joss was in talks, or being considered. That much was true – no April Fools gag there.

Now today we find out that he isn’t just being considered, but insiders are reporting that its pretty much a done deal and we are just waiting for the ink to dry on the dotted line!

EW’s Popwatch reports:

Friends, Romans, Countrygeeks, lend me your ears! Deadline brings us news that Joss Whedon is this close to directing the upcoming Avengers adaptation, the mega-sequel-spinoff that will bring together Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and more Marvel superheroes.

I for one think that Whedon is a fantastic pic. He knows his Marvel comics (having written one of the best X-Men story arcs in the last decade) and despite his rough TV track record all of his shows show a strong point in balancing big casts and playing to their strengths.
Its perfect for Whedon.

I hope this does come to pass and Whedon is in. This will be the icing on the cake for me as a fanboy and a movie patron. I have the utmost faith that Whedon could handle this.

  1. I don’t understand what writing a good comic book has to do with anything. Davif Goyer is a good writer that directed Blade Trinity. The Invisable and Unborn weren’t much better.

    1. Because David Goyer is not a good director. While Serenity is Joss’ only feature film, he has directed countless tv episodes of his shows.

Goyer is a fine writer, but not a great director.

      1. I disagree with you on firefly. I am not a fan of any of his work, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Outside of Buffy, it doesn’t seem like this guy has had much success, so I don’t know how many people actually do like his work.

      2. Dr Horrible set new standards for independent developed webcontent, Buffy was canceled after 7 seasons and still sees success as a popular comic book series, and Angel was 5 seasons. Dollhouse saw two seasons.

Firefly was not successful at creating rabidly loyal fans, and they did give it a chance with a feature film. That speaks to his success that he has connected with his fans on a deeper level.

No one is saying you have to love his stuff. All entertainment is subjective, but to suggest that Buffy was his only success is just not accurate, even if you dont like what he has done.

      3. Ok so Buffy and it’s spinoff.

2 seasons is hardly a success.

I am glad that he was able to please the few fans, but with this type of money, pleasing a few isnt going to cut it.

I’ve seen some great youtube videos, but that doesnt mean I would suggest any of these people get a movie deal.

      4. Still you are imposing your own personal views of his success by your own personal tastes for his product.

Two seasons is relative success when you have shows that get canceled after 3 episodes. It at least got that far. Shows with no success get canceled in or before their first season.

Still he has rabid fans, and they are not “a few”, but he is still the right guy for this job even if you dont like anything he has done so far.

      5. sure rodney…cept for i can make a list of tv writers and producers who suck too but have “made” it in hollywood. we are talking about the avengers…not some 2 bit corny tv side project. Dr. sing a long was complety made upon internet fandom.

  2. not a big whedon fan. I see way more misses then hits and everything that peoplelike of his is mostly do to fanboys, which is never a good sign IMO. Hey we are all entitled to love cheese….but whedon cheese isnt for me at all. seriously other then Toy Story what else has he done that i can say i like…..well nothing. To each is to own but seriously his TV shows are just horrible and Dr sing along was hokey

    1. have you given these shows a chance or just one or two encounters? I don’t see how people can say they are horrible with the crap that is on tv today his shows are so unique in my opinion (even if Firefly is a rip of cowboy bebop IMO). I love how he handles ensemble casts and that is what Avengers will be and he will cater to fan service which is what we all want in comic movies.

      1. endemble in your words is a crap production in mine…are you basing your opinion on firefly(i hated that show with a passion) or buffy? Hey we are all allowed our own opinion and mine is that this guy has not made anything that validates him getting the biggest tentpole move ever. To each is to own but im not a whedon fan. He seems like an awesome person with great concepts….but from past TV atrocities that i could never be happy for and the lust of fanboys IMO throws up red flags for me.

  3. With the origin stories out of the way due to the individual movies Whedon could sink his teeth right in and make this a bombastic movie. Its like the serenity movie if you just watched it you thought thats an ok action movie, but if you watch all of firefly you’d be like hot damn (in my opinion). I think this is totally gonna be Hot Damn territory.

  4. I’d say The Avengers will have its own trilogy of sorts.. I’d like to see the comic storylines be somewhat adapted by Joss Whedon into the screen, such as the “Civil War”, “The Initiative “Avengers Disassembled”, “The Ultron Imperative”, “The Initiative”, the current “Siege” or maybe even “The Ultron Imperative”.

    1. Sorry, but I just don’t see how most of these storylines could be handled properly on screen. The reason being is that most of the storylines you’ve mentioned would require too background and history to do them any justice. Avengers Disassembled? Firstly there’s been no mention of the Vision or Scarlet Witch being in the movie. That story was years in the making, going all the way back to Vision and Wanda getting married, having children, losing the children and Wanda going crazy. That’s just too much to tackle with a new franchise. The Initiative, Civil War and Siege are all linked and again too big of a story to tackle. Especially since most of it revolves around the bonds between Cap, Iron Man and Thor. It would be hard to make that bond believable when the team is just starting. I could see them doing an Ultron story, but not Imperative. Imperative was ok, but it was simply one of 100 Ultron returns stories. On a side note, I’d like to mention that there were some pretty good Avengers storyline prior to the year 2000. It seems like all the stories you’ve mention took place in the last ten years.

  5. This is going to be awesome. Whedon might not have the greatest track record when it comes to creating successful shows (exluding Buffy), but he knows what the fans want and I’m positive that he’ll deliver.

  6. Please dear God make this be so. I love his Astonishing Xmen story arcs and I know he can translate that to the ensemble work that will be the Avengers.
