Rodriguez offered Marvel’s Deadpool

After a long time of “radio silence”, it seems we have some news on the Deadpool front. It appears that the director’s chair for the proposed Marvel movie, Deadpool, has been offered.

IGN reports:

The Playlist reports that 20th Century Fox has offered the job to writer-director Robert Rodrguez (Desperado, Sin City). This is a project that Rodriguez is considering, but of course, nothing is set in stone.

This is the second offer in five months that Fox has pitched to Rodriguez, preceded by an offer to helm the new Planet of the Apes reboot (which Rodriguez declined). But this could be a telling sign that Fox likes what they see of the director’s upcoming film Machete. He also wrote and produced their upcoming Predators sequel.

  1. this is awesome. ryan reynolds is going to be a great deadpool and then to add robert rodriguez to the mix is perfect. he is a great director and is perfect for the dark type of action film that this story requires.

  2. I am reading his book right now and he does all the work write, direct, dp, and score the films. could he take a film where the studio will want him to only focus on directing. I think it would be a interesting change for him. He is very intelligent but he does not work with big crews.

After all his Book is called Rebel with out a Crew

  3. I’ve not analyzed Rodriguez as much as I’d like, but the violence and blatant insanity he brings sounds like a good fit for Wilson in my mind. Sold.

  4. It took me exactly 2 1/2 seconds to think about this when I read the post.
I’m pleased that Rodriguez has gotten an offer. Hopefully he’ll think it over for 2 1/4 seconds and sign the line. Right this very moment I’m thinking of all supporting cast possibilities in Deadpool-as I’m sure most of the int’l friends are.

If Rodriguez says no to this, then go to Nimród Antal- who Rodriguez worked with on Predators. But as of now I’m sold on Rodriguez.

A commenter brought up Ryan Reynolds. The key issue for me in my view isn’t how well Reynolds is in the part or if ‘Wolverine’ did the character justice (it really didn’t, but that’s why a spin off film anyway) but rather, Reynolds’ schedule. How fast does Fox want this film?
Reynolds plans to do another film -an action comedy- with Sandra Bullock after Green Lantern. Still, If Rodriguez signs, then there are five key elements in place.

    – Director
    – Possible editor, (as Rodriguez has been known to do on his films from time to time)
    – Script (Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick of Zombieland fame)
    – Lead actor
    – A producer (Lauren Shulen Donner, other X-Men producers)

Another question is the rating. I’m going to say…they will aim for a PG-13. They can try to skim around The XMen films, but folks are going to want to see some connection. (And there is the likelihood of Deadpool nemesis T-Ray coming forward to explain it all- “someone stole your name!”)

In any case, I’m down with this.

  5. Wow
I didn’t saw that one coming.
It’ll be a pleasent surprise if happens.
And i hope Mr Rodriguez gets rid off Ryan Reynolds.
    Someone darker

    1. dead pool is barely dark, like maybe because he’s deadly and crazy. but Ryan Reynolds is perfect for the role. cocky and constant jokes. yes the tone should be darker than Wolverine Origins but he does a good job with the character. if anything i hope Rodriguez takes away his Baraka-esque image.
