Lowest-Grossing Wide Releases of 2010

A great little list has hit the net via Moviefone that chronicles 2010’s lowest Boxoffice Grosses of this year. Remember, the Gross is the money that the movie took in before deductions like the cost of the film and advertising budget – its just the pure boxoffice numbers.

Now this list is only considering films that had over 1000 theaters in a wide release as not to confuse independent releases and limited release films in this mix that likely made far less money. The list also only considered the US domestic take. So lets check out 2010’s lowest rake at the boxoffice:

10. ‘Splice’ (Gross: $17 million. Widest release: 2,450 theaters.)

9. ‘Youth in Revolt’ (Gross: $15.3 million. Widest release: 1,873 theaters.)

8. ‘My Soul to Take’ (Gross: $14.7 million. Widest release: 2,572 theaters.)

7. ‘Repo Men’ (Gross: $13.8 million. Widest release: 2,521 theaters.)

6. ‘Case 39’ (Gross: $13.3 million. Widest release: 2,212 theaters.)

5. ‘Let Me In’ (Gross: $12.1 million. Widest release: 2,042 theaters.)

4. ‘Extraordinary Measures’ (Gross: $12.1 million. Widest release: 2,549 theaters.)

3. ‘Jonah Hex’ (Gross: $10.6 million. Widest release: 2,825 theaters.)

2. ‘MacGruber’ (Gross: $8.5 million. Widest release: 2,551 theaters.)

1. ‘The Warrior’s Way’ (Gross: $5.6 million. Widest release: 1,622 theaters.)

I can honestly say that I am not surprised by any of the titles on this list. And I don’t know that any movie on this list made its production budget back so they all qualify as boxoffice flops.

While many of the films just looked bad, we can blame that for a low boxoffice grab. But that isn’t to say that every film on this list was a bad movie.

Is there any movie on this list that you actually loved?

  1. Yes it is a deduction for taxable income not personal, so you could also use the interest charged as a deduction against business, rental and investment income, including interest, dividends and royalties. Student loan interest is actually a tax credit not a deduction to offset taxes owing.

  2. I heard great things about Let Me In, and the reviews were very solid (not to mention the original movie and book were fantastic), but I really thought they whiffed by not putting it out during Halloween. It definitely would have made a lot more bank had it been out in the Halloween season. And, if it’s anything like the originals, it is *very* creepy.

  3. Youth in Revolt and Repo Men were okay, but I absolutely loved Let Me In. I was expecting it to be !@#$, but it turned out to be an excellent movie. I dare say that it’s almost as great as Let the Right One In. I’m shocked that it didn’t take off. Surprisingly I actually liked MacGruber. I came into the theater expecting to hate it, but it was a decent comedy and probably the best SNL film I’d seen in a while.

  4. I’m surprised about Youth In Revolt also, that was a dang entertaining movie!

Regarding Repo Men, The last 30 minutes were brilliant, the entire twist of the plot and everything. But the thing that just made it horrible and unable to overcome the great twist ending was the world itself. Everyone and their mom in this world knew about Repo Men, and knew that it was nearly impossible to afford these things, so why would ANYONE do it, or the government allow it? None of that was explained in the least, so I ended up hating it, because the twist ending still didn’t explain the world, and so it was completely unbelievable.

  5. Repo Men is a little bit of a surprise as it had 2 strong leads, 1 of which was still riding the good publicity from Sherlock Holmes… but then again the story is pretty zany to attract a good audience.

I have not yet seen the Warriors way but from all of the trailers and info I’ve read on it I would have suspected it to do better. Really, it did the worst???

  6. 4 of the movies I seen amd thought were bad(Splice, Repo Men, Case 39, Jonah Hex).
1 I saw and thought was ok(Youth in Revolt).
3 looked too bad to watch(MacGruber, My Soul to Take, Extraordinary Measures).
1 I had a slight interest in but never got around to see(The Warrior’s Way)
1 I didn’t watch because i never got around to seeing the original first (Let me in)

  7. I am always surprised at people’s reaction to Splice on this blog. Did we not see the same movie? It’s HORRIBLE. Can someone please explain the brilliance to me?

    1. That is the subjectivity of film Dave.

You don’t have to find the film brilliant to accept that someone else did.

I don’t understand how people will to to a theater to watch Jackass but I wont deny them the right to find it entertaining regardless of my opinion on it.

  8. I am surprised to see Youth in Revolt. I didn’t expect much from that movie when I saw the trailers but it offered a lot more than I expected. Even on Rotten Tomatoes it got a 68.
