Craig Brewer to Rewrite and Direct the Footloose Remake

Footloose remake seems to have hit a few bumps, and I had hoped that this was one idea that would get swept under the carpet. But it looks like now Craig Brewer has re-written a script for it, and will direct it as well.
I am an emotional rollercoaster on this one as I do not want to see it re-made (the original holds up) but there may be a glimmer of hope.

Paramount Pictures is back on course with their “Footloose” remake, setting director Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow, Black Snake Moan) to bring the movie to the big screen from his own re-written script. However, Brewer will have to find a new lead now that Chace Crawford is exiting the project due to scheduling conflicts with “Gossip Girl.” The plan is to have the cameras rolling by this summer.
I was a little concerned that they had hired on Kenny Ortega to direct because Footloose is NOT a musical. Its a movie with a lot of music in it, but music is the story, not the movie.
And an updated film I just can’t see working in today’s culture. I hope they keep it an 80s film, because I just can’t see how in this media saturated generation they could possibly enforce a ban on rock music. In the original, the town was far removed from any radio stations, and tapes were “smuggled in” to be played in car radios by rebels.
I don’t think its impossible to do, but I am not optimistic about a remake of this movie.
However the addition of Craig Brewer does give me a little hope. Hustle and Flow grabbed culture of that time and showcased that drama against the heavy influence of music. This is the kind of vision I hope we get with Footloose.
Give it real drama, 80s music and a radical like Ren McCormick can lead that sleepy town out of its backwards way of life.

Two good things – Added Brewer, subtracted Crawford. This might not be as bad as it was looking to be.
I just wish they would scrap the idea altogether. Whilst Footloose isn’t a great movie, in the sense of being a classic, it certainly doesn’t need to be remade, especially if they try to use the same concept but in a modern setting.
Footloose isnt a great movie?
Blasphemer!
But I agree a modern setting wouldnt work well.
Footloose was great when it came out. now……….not so much.
didn’t hold up too well, but I’m older now and the teen dance stuff doesn’t fare well with me now-a-days.
I liked the Samburg tribute in “HOT ROD” though, it was silly, kinda like watchin’ the movie now
i never liked the original much, never got the appeal other than the soundtrack.
I’ll blaspheme some more.
Brewster is a better choice for director than Ortega. However—
I HATED Black Snake Moan.
I didn’t care much for Hustle & Flow
I have utterly failed to see why people love those films.
Other than Cristina Ricci in dirty underwear, me neither.
I’d rather watch her in “Anything Else”(woody allen)in her undies.
Hustle and Flow……….no comment.
like Jon Stewart said: “Three 6 Mafia 1 oscar”
Martin Scorsese: 0
Thank god that aint true anymore
You know, Craig Brewer has created two of the most original films involving music…and he goes from those to this? Fuck…
And who’s to say he doesn’t take this premise and run with it as he did with those?
Clearly you think he has the ability… so why not now?
It’s a good argument and I see your point. I’d just rather see him use his creativity for something original instead of jumping on the remake train. I’m not dismissing it 100% because we’ve been proven time and time again with Cronenberg’s The Fly and Scorsese’s The Departed, that a remake, in the hands of a talented director, can work. Still, Brewer; like a few other directors I follow, takes his time to come out with new films and I’ve been itching to see something from him since Black Snake Moan…a remake of a film I thought was just ok, wasn’t what I had in mind or looked forward to.
Remakes are even HARDER to do than something original in most cases. The only thing easy about remakes is the marketing. There is a built in audience or awareness of the property already there to build on.
But to re-do an existing movie without just scene for scene regurgitating it is quite a task. I would perfer someone with creativity be tasked with a remake instead of just getting some hack who is going to coast on the original script.
