Jovovich talks Resident Evil 5

With a very successful opening weekend for Resident Evil Afterlife, could yet another Resident Evil film be on its way?
Milla spilled about Resident Evil 5 and just what they are doing about it.
Screen Crave quotes:
Jovovich recently spoke to Vulture after the film’s successful 3 day opening and stated, …”we’re definitely going to make another one.” She says that director Paul WS Anderson already has some ideas for what he wants to do with the fifth film and he wants to incorporate input from the audience as well.
“We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It’s going to be a more interactive process.”
Fan input? That sounds like a good idea. Now how they will try to please all those fans at once will be a hard task, and I imagine a lot of those fans will want the series to be more like the video game.
But consider this. Video game movies tend to suck. Resident Evil has risen above that in putting out films that stand on their own separate from its own source material.
But what will the fans bring as advice? What advice would you give them?

“What advice would you give them?”
Reboot
Advice usually has a reason to back it up. Otherwise it sounds more like a random guess.
Any reason you would like to see the series rebooted?
Make it a horror movie where the “good guys” aren’t superhuman. And give umbrella a reason for there actions. It doesn’t make outbreaks be a cover up like in the games instead of umbrella still being evil after 99.9 percent of earth population is gone.
I agree with Cloud. I got sick of the games when they abandoned the horror element, and all the action really turned me away from the movies as well. If there was any way possible to make a RE movie with the same feel as RE 2 (the game, that is), that would be the best thing they could ever try to accomplish.
Oooops my last comment broke rule 4.
My advice is move on to another game property before the RE movie fans get bored from stale material. RE is now on 4 with a possible fifth. This is getting into Saw/80s horror flick territory. There are way too many established game ideas to stay stuck on one. Devil May Cry and Castlevania come to mind. Lots of action (which Anderson has shown he can do well) and he’d pretty much just be going from zombies to demons/vampires.
A reboot less than 10 years after the first one? Seriously?
Hulk.
Spider-man
Fantasic four in the works.
As mentioned, this wouldn’t be the first reboot to happen before the property was out of recent memory.
Hulk was retconned, so kind of a reboot. Spider-Man and Fantastic Four film franchises are currently being rebooted.
TV’s Nikita just got a reboot. They are already talking about rebooting Battlestar Galactica for a film series based on the original. So technically UN-rebooting it with a retcon which they hope will lead to a new film franchise or TV series.
Reboot is in baby!
Okay I’ll give you that (even though the Hulk and FF movies weren’t that well received and IMO really needed a reboot/retcon but you are on the money about Spiderman).
But I still say that with so many good existing properties there are too many good choices out there for Anderson to just continue on with RE. Hell I’d like to see him take a swing at Metroid. And he could even have Jovovich in the suit considering all you really need for Samus is a blonde woman with with an athletic build.
Metroid lacks any real story. I fear that any attempt to make a Metroid movie will turn out to be just like most video game movies.
Resident Evil only escapes that fate by a very small margin. There really isnt any depth to the RE stories either. But deviating the movies from the games has worked in their favour.
I like 3D, but I think they can do another movie without it. Being a long time fan of the games and books of the series I’ve been wanting to see alot more of the characters. If they can bring them all together for one final umbrella takedown, and finish the movie series, I think that would be the best sendoff they could do.
It would be neat if they could incorporate some elements from the Resident Evil 4 video game into the film. I thought that was the best Resident Evil game and I could see it work as a movie.
Come on Rodney most video games either lack story or use plots that are nearly cliche. I think Metroid could work with some tweaking.
Make the Metroid a creation instead of lifeforms (you could say something like a blend of biological and mechanical so you won’t have to worry about giving them a background). Set the story so that the Space Pirates steal the only prototype (throw in something about how they are so hard to produce, thus making that one very vaulable). Samus (being the badass bounty hunter she is) goes to their planet to recover it and gets shot down. While searching the planet she learns that the Metroid is not an entirely new idea but rather something that an ancient civilization (Chozo) created but destroyed themselves fighting over it. Once she beats the Space Pirates and gets the Metroid back she has to decide on whether to take it back or destroy it. Let’s say she “destroys” it by tossing down a pit…only for it to be found by a few Chozo that have been alive all this time, know what the Metroid is, and rise again (aka sequel).
You’re right its not high art but I think it would be better than what’s been passing for a video game movie before the RE movies came along.
I gave up after the 1st one! and part 2 was with Nemesis right? then I gave up after part 2.
Love the Actress, Dig the whole story behind these movies(it’s actually more of a zombie flick than a horror one.)loved the game (part3 nemesis was the best PS2)
BUT I gotta say, as a mere observer and small fan of the games(playing the original on ps1 then part 3 on ps2 when they came out) they are gettin a little stale with just the trailers they put out. I mean, We all know these aren’t your “cream of the crop” movies or even “cream” Sci-Fi or horror for that matter. yes they appeal to a certain built-in fan base and are bankable for the bare minimum that they’ll make. aside from this I think 4′s,5′s,and 6′s are just wasteable films. I know they serve a purpose, employ people, and make their small mark. BUT what do we really expect from this stuff at this point? I for one dont expect these to be “FUCKIN’ AWESOME”, just good enough to kill an hour and a half. then I can go on with my life.
Haven’t played in ages! are these still cool?
How much more can you get from Zombie survival anyways?
I dont even know what I’m sayin anymore.
Oh! : Just die Already!
Oh yeah, 1 more thing: the post that said somethin’ to the effect of “when were these about super human strengh action hero stuff?”
was on the money cause I remember playin the 1st games waaaay back when, and you couldn’t walk 3 steps without having those Fuckin’ creepy zombies bitin’ your neck and shit! :Where were my super-human abilities in that game?!
HA!
i think that the movies are pretty good and by the way *spoilers* they took away her super human abilities so they could make it like the games now
Stay on the right track, do not deviate, don’t mingle all the 3D stuff, special effects with all the munbo-jungo around, just to attract people!… but if you do, do it with STYLE ! ;)
These movies aren’t about resident evil. These movies are about what is trendy right now. Zombie is the buzz word of 2009 and 2010. So anything you do involving Hot ass Mila and Zombies is going to do well.
Don’t fix what Aint Broke
Get input from Fans and Put her sweet ass in rediculous set pieces and watch her blow crap up
It works for the expendibles
It works for RE
It will keep working.
I thought they were going to completely “reboot” after this one and make it MUCH more along the lines of the games series. Which is why I couldn’t wait til this one came out, just to get that over with and on to the road of the “reboot”.
Seems allot of other people couldn’t wait til it came out as well, but because they actually wanted to see it. Which I guess is what’s now derailed the supposed reboot.
Oh well, another dream crushed by Hollywood. Now I feel like playing threw Resident Evil 4 again. ;)
A reboot is whats needed, enough said. As someone in the film industry, I believe they took a great horror based videogame a exploited it. For example the whole movie series consisting on action packed film sequences of eye popping photography. Its not resident evil, and I think if you haven’t played the games you have no opinion, simply because its the foundation of one of the best series in horror franchises and the films. Milla is a great actress in everything she’s in but her character in the films is not needed nor a fan favorite.
Sorry. They took a great blood and gore story and turned it into an action movie. The box office would have sky rocketed alot more if they had stuck to the original story with a few extra twists of course. no doubt a reboot should be made with a better special effects, and a better adaptation.
Her character is not needed?
Sorry. Every one of these films was because of Milla. If they tried to make a Resident Evil after the first one without her in it, it would have failed.
They adapted the game to a film with a new story and different angle and you cannot deny its successes.
And video game movies that have been faithful to the console shooters they are based on have done better?
Adaptation MEANS changes for a different medium. And they made changes and they have worked.
Your right, the movies wouldn’t have been as successful if milla wasnt in the other ones, but why was she in the first one. And the movie were successful. but yes i think if did base it closer to the videogame because of its success. Thats what seperates it from other franchises that have adapted to the big screen it would have been better. Silent hill was almost shot for shot of the game and a sequel is on its way. like I said they were good movie but not resident evil.
You just said it yourself “They adapted the game to a film with a new story and different angle” And what we saw was not an adaptation they wadded it up ,”the RE Franchise” and destroyed it. If the movies are so successful for the resident evil franichise then why is the so much talk about a reboot from not just bloggers and writers but big movie producers as well. Clearly fans are not happy and shoudn’t be. It’s been like spitting in the face of why the franchise is so popular. The fans are what made the game successful. and now i can name twelve video game based movies that will be closely related to the games themselve. coming out in the next few years, and theres a reason behind it, the flak thet’re getting from resident evil.
“it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want”
And why didn’t you when starting the franchise?
If a reboot will happen, which I hope it will, I would like to have a movie showing me the drama and horror the citizens of Racoon City would experience more close. Chris Redfield might be an important character. Andersons movies are way too cynical and fails to produce sympathy for any character involved. If we ought to be scared and feel excited, we need to feel with the people. With lines like “No. You’re just another asshole” makes me loose respect both for the villain and the heroine.
Let new RE breath the same 90′s atmosphere as the games instead of this cheesy 2000 action with Milla Jovovich as some stereotypical copy of Tomb Raider. I’m not sure what the producers were thinking or what they were/are trying to achieve.
I agree 100%.
