Gwyneth Paltrow is set to play an aging country star who struggles with alcoholism while she faces the stress of her career winding down in Country Strong. From the trailer it looks like she finds the strength to overcome her addiction and make a comeback professionally.
And now we hear that she actually got advice from her Iron Man co-star Robert Downey Jr on how to properly portray someone addicted.
Cinemablend quotes Paltrow
“I actually emailed Robert Downey, Jr., who’s been sober for a long time. I was like, ‘Explain to me addiction’. He wrote me the most amazing email, and it really helped me understand it.”
You know you have a certain level of comfort when you can cross such personal lines so casually. Remember when you were a staggering hopeless drunk? Can you tell me about that to help me with a role where I have to pretend to be damaged goods?
That can’t at all be awkward.
But its great to see that Paltrow got an inside look to help her understand her role and that Downey was cool about sharing his darker times with her.

Gwyneth Kate Paltrow should just run for president already…
Email is kind of low blow to me. At least talk to him on the phone, but something this personal should be done in person, and not talked about afterwards.
He seemed quite willing to help her out even with just an email.
Its not like she was dumping him. They are both busy people and I am sure that email is a perfectly acceptable way to keep in touch. She had a request, and he was able to give a thoughtful answer.
There is no offense given or taken here, so I don’t see what was so “low” about it.
i agree with rodney. i have a close friend who was addicted to heroin and kicked it. he is more than willing to share his thoughts and help people understand what he went through. he wouldnt care what for or in what method the communication was happening. email, phone, carrier pigeon, its all good.
Much respect to both Paltrow and Downey, her for asking so as to get the role correct and him for answering so politely.
That was actually a very interesting thing to know. obviously they have a good working relationship
