PeeWee Herman Returns with Judd Apatow

Looks like Paul Reubens’ long rumoured return to the PeeWee Herman character is finally becoming a reality, and he will join with Paul Apatow to direct his next feature film!

NY Times quotes Reubens:

Mr. Reubens has spoken frequently in interviews about two Pee-wee-centered film scripts he has written that would continue the adventures of his manic character seen in the movies “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and “Big Top Pee-wee” as well as the CBS children’s series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”

But after Mr. Apatow read these scripts, Mr. Reubens said, “He was more interested in something closer, in the same vein and the same genre, as ‘Big Adventure.’”

What Mr. Apatow wanted, Mr. Reubens said, was “a reality-based world and a linear road movie.”

So that’s the path that Mr. Reubens and a co-writer, Paul Rust, are working along, for now.

“That appears to be what we’re doing,” Mr. Reubens said, “although it’s at such an early stage right now that there still exists the possibility that this could turn into the ‘Playhouse’ movie. I don’t think we know the answer to that yet.”

I really liked how PeeWee kicked off as just a guy who is socially out of his depth surrounded with his oddities and an unnatural affection for a bicycle, but beneath that exaggerated innocence and immaturity is a pure gentle heart.

I say keep him in the real world, and do the road trip thing.

Playhouse was just TOO juvenile and lacked that depth to the character that made PeeWee’s Big Adventure such a silly ride worth taking.

With Apatow involved, PeeWee isn’t likely to go stoner adult on us, but I suspect it won’t be so childish.

What are the odds he smokes from an apple?

    • Rodney says:

None. PeeWee was always family friendly, and just because Apatow knows it.

He wouldn’t get involved with a property like this and then try to change everything about PeeWee.

      • Iam Wright says:

You might want to look into the origins of the PeeWee character and watch the HBO special. There was adult humor happening just below the surface.

      • Rodney says:

Iam, I was well aware of PeeWee’s origins.

There was always tongue in cheek and suggestive gags before he did the kids show, but he never outright smoked pot or even swore.

      • Iam Wright says:

Guess we had a misunderstanding there. All cool

      • Herby says:

Family Friendly? You obviously never saw Pee-Wee’s stand up comedy show.

      • Rodney says:

And Herbie, you clearly haven’t seen his movies or the Playhouse TV Show.

        PeeWee is clean.

      • Herby says:

Actually was always a big fan of the play-house, never missed an episode. And “Big Adventure” was fantastic. I just don’t think Rubens wants to get back to the family entertainment thing. In fact, I’ll bet you right now (I”m broke so a gentlemen’s bet) that the first scene in the movie will have Pee-Wee coming out of a porn theater (perhaps with a bottle of Jergens lotion).

      • Rodney says:

As much as I would love to see Pee Wee get a little more tongue and less cheek, I don’t know that they would go that way.

I am still predicting clean Pee Wee.

I think I can live w/o another PeeWee movie. Plus this is the oddest pairing I’ve seen in a while. I would have never imagined that Paul Reubens and Judd Apatow would work together.

  3. David Lopan says:

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure still slays to this day. I say bring it on! Big Top Pee Wee was awful though.

  4. Joe Phelps says:

A 60 year old man in heavy makeup pretending to be a little boy?

What… he has a history of public masturbation and a huge collection of “artwork” depicting naked children?

I give it a creepy rating of 87%.

We haven’t seen this much bomb potential since the Cold War.

    • Rodney says:

I dont know if one public indecency charge can really be called “a history”

And PeeWee has always been kind of on the creepy side.

I can see him making a comeback.

  5. Joe Phelps says:

No chance, no way, no how.

The fruits and nuts in Hollywood and New York might accept him but middle America is done with “Pee Wee” Reubens.

    It’ll bomb… guaranteed.

  6. 420BAND says:

I loved Pee Wee in the Cheech and Chong Classic “Next Movie”

“I know you are but what am I?”

Playhouse……Not so much. (R.I.P. Phil Hartman)

    Big Adventure wasn’t torture
