Sgt Rock film drops WW2 for a Future War Story

Joel Silver says that the Sgt Rock film will be setting into high gear after reading the script of the big screen adaptation of the World War 2 soldier comic book character.

Except that it won’t be World War 2?

Dark Horizons shares:

Part of the reason it seems is that Silver just received a new draft of the script this week and the story will not be set during World War II but rather take place in the not-too-distant future.

Silver says “It’s a little bit in the future. As a war movie, it’s not going to be ‘where it’s been,’ it’s going to be ‘where it’s going.’ We didn’t want to do Iraq, we didn’t want to do a contemporary war. We wanted to do a sort of futuristic war.”

Genius! Lets take the setting away from the core character, remove everything that makes him what he is, and then throw all of that just over the rainbow into the Future.

You know, a war movie set in the not to distant future could be great if done right. They might even have a good film on their hands here. But WHY SGT ROCK??? Really? They couldn’t just make a future speculative war movie?? GI Joe did it. Maybe they should call it GI Joe and reboot it for the fans who hated the adaptation?

This just isn’t Sgt Rock and Easy Company.. at all.

Bullshit! That’s how I feel right now.

  3. I don’t know what is more depressing.

1- Some writer(s) were paid to write that draft and pitch the damned thing>. They would be wise to use pseudonyms.

2- That people at Silver Pictures and WB loved the pitch.

    I’m an optimist.
I hope that they go back to past drafts that were set in WWII or that someone comes in and rewrites the darned thing -it does not matter who- and puts it back in WWII.

As of right now, I can *maybe* see this working as steampunk, but that’s a huge stretch. Save everyone headaches and go WWII.

I can understand their perspective. The whole “Go America!” thing isn’t really big with audiences and WW2 films are a tough sell. Anyway, I hope this works out.

After watching “Combat!” as a kid on TV, Sgt. Rock was one of my favorite comic books. Not WW2 is just a big stupid mistake. Why not just call it “Universal Soldier 2020″ and reboot that lame series instead? Leave Sgt. Rock in his right time frame. I’m hoping these same idiots don’t pick up “The Haunted Tank” comicbooks and set it…. IN SPACE!!!! *pukes*

You do realize that Universal Soldier had another installment release to DVD just this week? Just sayin.

Also, Universal Soldier has little in common with Sgt Rock, so I don’t know why you would think that Rock would be mistaken for that franchise just because its in the future.

Tommie Lee fuckin’ Jones as SGT ROCK!

    WHO’S WIT ME?

    • Rodney says:

Not Me. Id rather see a man who doesnt look like he is retired to play Rock.

Rock was gruff and fit. An intimidating form to say the least.

Tommy isnt. At all. And he is like 65.
