Tom Hardy could play Det Bullock in Dark Knight Rises?

Since Tom Hardy was attached to Batman 3, now known as The Dark Knight Rises, speculation about who he might play have run rampant on sites across the net.

Riddler is officially out. Deadshot? Killer Croc? Black Mask? Nightwing? Well IMDB says he is rumoured to play Detective Harvey Bullock.

Live for Films speculates:

If you head over to IMDb they currently have Hardy down to play Det. Harvey Bullock. He is the tough, no-nonsense policeman who was a bit corrupt, but then ended up doing the job properly. He can’t stand Batman and is partnered with Renee Montoya

Now while I don’t hold IMDB as gospel, this is a role he was never rumoured for as much of the speculation had him playing one of the heroes or villains, not a supporting citizen role.

But it makes sense considering how The Dark Knight ended. Bats sets himself up as the badguy to divert attention away from one of Gothams brightest hopes being a dark failure. To preserve hope he tells Gordon to make him a symbol to be reviled.

Bullock himself is supposed to be somewhat corruptable and has a repuation for hating Batman. If they didn’t explore what they set up in the end of the last film it would be a waste.

What do you think of Tom Hardy playing a rough around the edges cop with a hate on for the Bat?

I think this is a logical conclusion. They need a cop who is going to actively seek Batman because we know Gordon will not. He’ll put up a front and perhaps go along with it to some degree, but he knows the truth, and will not risk anything bad happening to Batman. I’m excited. Hardy will do a great job.

They probably won’t let him use that fanTAStic british accent of his, but whatever, I know he will live up to the occation.

  3. Roderick says:

he needs to get fat for the role is all im saying…

Forget the Bat! Anyone see those wicked Capt. America pics!
    Make mine marvel :)

Great actor, but I don’t know if he fits in this particular case. Not trying to be comic purist, but the Harvey Bullock in my head is an over-weight, grizzled slob (although an honest cop). However, Nolan has earned my trust, so I guess it’s wait and see.

  6. This was one of my hopes for the new film. I hope it’s right.
Already I see some folks saying ‘well, he’d be clumsy, heavy set’ -even if that was reienforced by the animated series. But in the comics, especially Post Crisis, the character was retconned a bit. He actually got promotions, lost weight and even worked for Gordon to “appear” corrupt” as to get tips on varied crime figures. (Bullock even worked for an INTERPOL-like spy agency Checkmate on the side)

Also, the fact that we had Flass as a heavy set (and currupt) cop in Batman Begins – a near 180 from his comics counterpart- it might make sense if a new adaptation of the character might also stray away from the heavy-set look. Bullock would be “an antagonist”for Batman in a unique way. Aside from leading “the manhunt” for Batman, it may also be a bit more personal.

Let’s say Bollock was crooked once and had reformed. This would include his “screw Miranda” attitude as he beats up low level thugs and killers. Batman does some of the things that he used to do. He might have taken offense at Batman beating on The Joker -which inspired others to do the same, which in turn led to “the phone call” and Joker’s escape. He may have also been approached to take a bribe or manipulated to unwittingly aid The Joker (when they thought they were helping Sal Malroni)

Batman took responsibility for the deaths of the two officers by Two-Face. Bullock could easily believe it “could have been him” without much chance to prove himself.

    I’m all for this.

Hardy could easily nail this character fit or fat, he’s not always been slim for his roles and has got into each character really well in the past so there is no need to worry.

In my opinion only of course.

    Role on Bats3

Tom Hardy would be a good actor for the role, But given the charecters popularity and lack of personality, He would be a wasted talent, He needs more of a challenge because he’s a awesome actor.

    • Rodney says:

So a popular character is not good enough for Hardy’s talent?

You really need to read the book if you think Bullock is lacking in personality. Considering Nolan’s track record I have faith that if he is choosing to use this actor for the role, then he is going to use him appropriately and give some depth to Bullock.

Otherwise Nolan would have cast an Extra to be Bullock and name drop him in one scene.

      • V. Rawlinson says:

I agree, this character will suit Hardy fine. In the end, it is what the actor brings to the character….the character can not make the actor. Hardy is becoming a sensational actor, and this role will only push him towards more stardom which he deserves.

      • Jonnyelfc says:

Hardy can do better, Bullock from where i’ve known him from is the animated series. and i’m sure thats where most people will know him from, Also in the last few weeks he’s been rumoured to be the riddler so how can a actor fall so far….Bullock seems a over-aggressive Gordon side-kick, Hardys to much of a great actor to be a side-kick, I am slowly losing all faith in Nolan with the on/off rumours of no riddler, Jude Law is right there and should be cast or atleast considered extremely hard! for the obvious reasons.

  9. Pete says:

How can you cite IMDB? All that is is some moron fan who has Tom Hardy as Detective Bullock. Just a fan. IMDB is nothing but fans (mostly idiotic) posting crap like this. Don’t rely on IMDB. Thank you.

    • Rodney says:

And as I mentioned above “while I don’t hold IMDB as gospel” it is interesting to speculate this because its one of the roles never brought up in regards to this actor.

And its not a “fan listing”. IMDB does have user contributed content but if just anyone can change listings it would be a cesspool of incorrect information. While its not gospel (as some things are not correct) there are surprisingly few errors on there.

Also, the listing does say RUMOURED. So no one is claiming this is fact, just that it brings up an interesting consideration for the role that hadn’t been brought up before.

      • Jonnyelfc says:

IMDB is the best movie site on the planet, If somethings rumoured its set as rumoured it can change, nothings set in stone, It just changes through studio’s decisions.
