Ras Al Ghul returns in Dark Knight Rises -Kind Of

He was a body double for Armie Hammer in ‘The Social Network’, now Josh Pence has a new role- a young Ras Al Ghul in ‘Dark Knight Rises’. Screen Junkies gives us the lowdown:

Though the plot of the film remains under wraps, Pence’s role clearly indicates that Ra’s Al Ghul, Batman’s mentor-turned nemesis who died in Batman Begins, isn’t entirely out of the picture quite yet.

The scene in question is a flashback to 30 years before the events in ‘Batman Begins’, so my thoughts are basically Talia related. Of course it’s a flashback- unless Ras stepped into the Lazarus Pits and got a big facelift, right?

  1. morons the young ras in the movie is gonna be when hes wife gets killed and he takes his revenge and keep ur comic book shit out of the good movies

  2. I hope he takes the bath and emerges as a younger Ra’s. I know it’s been said that kinda stuff won’t fit in these kinda movies but I always try to keep a healthy dose of skepticism of anything said prior to a movies actual release.

Hell, I remember when Zack Snyder swore up and down that Zod wouldn’t have a part in his Superman… look how that turned out…

  3. I know Nolan didn’t want Supernatural stuff in his films, but I was always hoping he’d dive a few inches into pseudoscience and give us Mr Freeze.

  4. kung fu, Krav maga, and kyokushin karate ? No, not really, Batman’s martial art is the Keysi Fighting Method an offshoot of jeet kune do, A relatively new martial art choosen for his brutality and realistic approach, also for the fact that wearing 30 to 40 lbs of body armour will restrict movement.
As for being punched in the face by thugs, I didn’t noticed munch, I taught he was quite skilled in a brutal kind of way wish ad to the realistic approach.

    1. Ok, my comment about the fighting seems to be wrong or even pointless when I read the replies. I guess we all have our fantasies of how we would like to see Batman fight in a movie and Nolan’s direction doesn’t entirely represent mine. I like the more brutal style of taking down guys but, like you said, the suit itself may be at fault for the lack of fluidity when Bale performs the scenes.

  5. Looks like I’m getting my wish. Talia Al Ghul will be plotting revenge against the Bat for the death of her father (with a little flashback to explain who she is and where she come from). It will end up with a mega chick fight between Talia and Catwoman at the end alongside Bane versus Batman. I hope Nolan will work on the fights sequences a bit more in next movie. They were really unspectacular in the first two films. Batman is supposed to be this uber expert in martial arts but he keeps getting punched in the face by stupid thugs even with his new suit which is supposed to make him more agile and faster, pretty lame.

    1. Do you know martial arts at all? Because if you did you would know that he is using a mixture of martial arts such as kung fu, Krav maga, and kyokushin karate some other forms. And you would know that even the grates fighter such as Jet Li in real life gets hit in the face once in a while. You learn and master one of those and then maybe you can talk a bout him not being able to fight.

      1. I’m not saying he doesn’t do any recognizable martial arts in the movie, I’m saying that he should dominate every fights (unless he,s fighting someone like Al Ghul) and not get punch in the face by stupid thugs. Maybe Nolan went this way to ground the character in reality even more but I still think the fights should be faster and more fluid.

      2. by thugs you mean ras al ghul minions? they’re all master assasins, almost every one of them are on par with bruce wayne. Beside there are no martial artists in the world that can completely dodge attack. Even bruce lee get punched or kicked once & twice. Also i didn’t notice batman got beaten by common street thugs in both movies too. Mostly batman can dispatched them with ease.

    2. @Berbard, I was talking about the Joker’s henchmen and I didn’t say he was getting absolutly beat up to by them….ah hell anyway, it seems you all see things in a certain way and I don’t, so if you’re all on the same page then I’m must be wrong.

Whatever my reasons are, I still think that some aspects of the fight scenes need work in regard to the character and the way Nolan handles them but THAT’S ME. Sorry to have started all this, wasn’t my intention.

      1. If your talking about Jokers thugs. Batman is fighting four men at a time. He’s going to get hit. When you fight you get hit in the face. Mike Tyson in his prime would dominate, but he would still get hit in the face. Bruce Lee would spar and get hit in the face. Silva, St. Pierre, Jon Bones Jones, and other dominate UFC fighters get hit in the face. Whether they are fighting someone of equal talent or lesser talent. Nolan’s fights with Batman are realistic. No matter how skilled you are at martial arts, if you’re taking on multiple opponents at a time you are going to take few shots. You sound like someone who has never been in a fight before.

  6. I’m sure Ra’s Al Ghul will be plotting revenge against Bruce Wayne after the train crash in “Batman Begins”. Perhaps that will featured in this film “The Dark Knight Rises”?

      1. Nolan has already made it clear that the supernatural will not exist in his version of the films.

It is one of the reasons why he thinks his Batman cannot co-exist with the rest of the justice league.

I disagree, but we already know who the boss is of these films, so I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for Ras to be resurrected while Nolan is on watch.

  7. Ok.. like Gary Oldman mentioned that “The Dark Knight Rises” will definitely bring it back to “Batman Begins”, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Liam Neeson reprise his landmark role as Ra’s Al Ghul in “Rises”… this news definitely raises the stakes for Neeson to play Ra’s again and this guy Pence perhaps could be featured in flashbacks as a younger Ra’s… what do you guys think?
