Tomb Raider reboot gets some writers

You know I thought it had been a while since we heard about a movie adaptation of a video game and today we get the satiate that interest with some news on the Tomb Raider reboot. Word on the internetz is that Hawk Otsby and Mark Fergus are being tapped to bring their expertise to the production.

Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have been tapped to write the new Tomb Raider movie project being produced by Graham King and Tim Headington…
Fergus and Ostby worked on Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men, earning an Oscar nomination in the best adapted screenplay category. They are credited on 2008’s Iron Man and worked on Akira, the adaptation of the landmark Japanese animated movie in very active development at Warner Bros. They also were among several writers on this summer’s Cowboys & Aliens, starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig.

These guys have been putting out some quality work so I think there’s little to be surprised about that there’s an interest in these guys helping to re-introduce Lara Croft to the masses. One tidbit that they are reportedly aiming for is

“they want to create an “origin story for Lara Croft that solidifies her place alongside Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in the pantheon of great female action heroes.”

I think that’s an odd goal. I don’t know if they even need to set that goal as Lara Croft is about as mainstream as the names they are aiming toward. This is one of those films I’m not convinced needs to be associated with the word re-use reboot because they could have just as easily replaced Jolie and made a sequel or prequel without impacting anything. Regardless, I’m really getting ready for all the hysteria that I expect will surround the casting of the title role. I’m talking Wonder Woman level of hysteria.

  2. The videogame REBOOT of Tomb Raider is also going to tell the origin of Lara Croft. I think she’s like 17 years old from what I heard.

  3. Hell, with those writers, I’m feeling pretty confident that this has a good chance of breaking the trend of sub-par VG movies (and while I predict Uncharted might be a decent film, it’ll probably end up receiving a lot of flak from fans of the games for… well, not really being Uncharted).
