American Pie Reunion

Are you ready for another helping of pie? Ready or not, today THR helps us learn that my generation’s slacker gang is getting back together for what is currently titled as “American Reunion”.

The studio has completed deals with Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy to reunite for what is being called American Reunion.

The studio is currently working to bring in many of the other members of the original cast and is in negotiations with Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge to reprise their roles.

God I hate looking back at films like these from my youth as they inevitably remind me that I am no longer accepted in that category. It’s been a whopping 8 years since American Wedding’s release and I think that a return to the franchise is actually a really great idea. I’d love to see what the cast of characters have been up to after 8 years, if they’ve had kids, and the continuation of the M.I.L.F. running gags that made this franchise an endearing part of young adult life leading into the new millennium.

This one just shot way high on my radar with just the announcement, and with that I am now ready for the inevitable debate/mystery surrounding “who’s returning” and “who’s not” speculation. They better bring back Shitbrick.

  1. I’m interested in this movie for the same reason as Anthony (was in high school when the first came out and it meant a lot to my generation) but I’m also worried that I’ve outgrown it. I can’t watch today’s “American Pie”-esque high school movies, they seem juvenile and are not funny to me. If this Reunion movie follows the same sex-gross-out shock formula it may be more depressing than funny.

Or I may laugh like a giddy high schooler.

    1. “I can’t watch today’s “American Pie”-esque high school movies, they seem juvenile and are not funny to me.”

Long Live Jeff Spiccoli !!!!!!! (Fast Times at Ridgemont High)

      ha ha

  2. News Flash!!!!!: negotiations with Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge to reprise their roles in another American Pie closed today. their suspected payrate is Free Kraft Services and they can keep thier wardrobes!

    so everybodys back then?

      1. Agreed! But to be fair to Thomas Ian Nicholas, he’s been doing a lot of indie movies and has been focusing on a music career. I heard some of his first record, it wasn’t bad.

  3. I don’t know about going back to American Pie. American Wedding left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. And for the most part those movies are series of highjinx and weird situations that culminate in a wild party at the end. While people in their early 30s are by no means past their party days even as you say here: “God I hate looking back at films like these from my youth as they inevitably remind me that I am no longer accepted in that category.” I’m not sure if that’s gonna fly with folks who should for the most part be on to bigger and better things.

If anything maybe start a new series with new kids that are still in high school (because let’s face it high school culture can change a lot in 10 or so years). You could even use the same high school and have a few cameos from the veterans but (or maybe even use Stifler’s little brother as a main character, oh and throw in Eugene Levy somehow) I think the original characters have just aged out of that bracket.

I think the only way a new American Pie would work is if you were to separate it from a big part of the formula that made it a hit in the first place, or else you’ll have a Seth Rogen film.

    1. Yeah, that movie you’re describing is called American Pie: Band Camp. They’ve made at least four more American Pie movies with a different cast. Each had a different Stiffler as well.

      1. Touche…

Maybe I’m showing my age but I just don’t want to see the American Pie name run into the ground (any worse that those direct to dvd movies you mention have).

If you look at other teen film classics (regardless of what they did at the box office there are a lot of people who can chime off those names) like Porky’s, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Ferris Buehler, and most of what John Hughes did in the 80s you’ll see that they didn’t get run down with a long line of sequels and (as far as I know) no one has tried to resurrect those names either. You may see similar themes and ideas but not the same names.

So maybe I’m thinking they should just let the whole American Pie thing go and start something new.

    2. I’m with Christopher on this one. They made those direct to DVD movies and included Eugene Levy. Not sure on their level of success.

And most high school kids today consider me old and I’m 27!

      1. Come on Anthony! Youth is a mindset not a number. I think as long as us chronologically challenged folks stay young at heart and don’t become fearful, unaccepting old complainers, age will always be just a number. On the American Pie front, I really enjoyed the original. I loved the fact that all the different highschool groups (jock, nerd, outcast) were represented and they were all friends and actually enjoyed each others company. To me that was the welcome change to this genre of films, not the pie fuc**** scene. Usually in these films you get the highschool cliques at war with each other, the fact that they could all sit down and conversate was great.
