Joe Johnston wants a Winter Soldier movie too

And in a single headline Mr. Johnston has become a person of extreme interest. Ya see, I’ve been hoping for either a suggestion or outright inclusion of the Winter Soldier storyline for months now. I think it’s a fantastic companion story to accompany the main Captain America movie. Joe Johnston Agrees.

I told the Marvel guys that there is a character that I’m really interested in called ‘The Winter Soldier’ and that if, ‘you guys decide to make that picture I would definitely be interested.’ It’s the ‘Bucky’ Barnes story. We talked about ‘The Winter Soldier’ which is the continuation of what his story is. It’s basically that he is captured by the Russians and he’s brainwashed and turned into an assassin. But you know there are a thousand ways to go with that. I just think that it would be interesting to take a character that was in ‘Captain America’ and build a story around him. Plus, I like Sebastian Stan a lot (who played Bucky) I think he would be an interesting actor to build another feature around.

What a smart guy. The story is really compelling and really only developed in the comics in the last 6yrs or so, which is like 2 hrs in comic book time. Bucky was revised and re-fitted after decades of overlook as a simple, and wholesome, sidekick. His new continuity is really interesting for fans of comics like myself:

In the Ed Brubaker version, Bucky was an orphaned kid who lived on the military base where Steve Rogers trained for the Super Soldier program. He was a great, vicious fighter, and only a few years younger than Steve Rogers. Bucky ended up being the wetworks guy for Cap’s team – the pointman who could take out enemies with extreme prejudice. As Cap, Steve Rogers wore the flag and busted heads, but Bucky was instrumental in getting the job done. His death wasn’t quite what it appeared to be, however, as his body was recovered by a Russian military team and eventually turned into a secret Soviet agent who could pass as an American and take out elusive targets: the Winter Solider.

I really like the idea of Bucky pulling the trigger. Heck, who knows what he could’ve been doing when Cap wasn’t looking, not to mention all that time after Cap had been M.I.A, and he’d been working as a Russian agent. Lot’s and lot’s of great stories here with it culminating with the character ultimately taking the Captain America mantle for a bit. And let me not even get into his… encounters with Wolverine. That’s a movie in and of itself.

  1. If he really wants to make it happen I say let him go for it. The more good Marvel characters to make it to the big screen the better in my opinion. Because the more full circle the Marvel movie universe becomes.

  2. They need to make this film. Perhaps as a Captain America sequel (Part 3?).
For WB/DC Comics’ side, they need to make the Red Hood and Azrael storylines in future Bat sequels .

    1. I honestly don’t know if that was sarcasm or not. Winter Soldier I could see in a Cap sequel. But the rest just sounds too out there.

Red Hood would only work AFTER a Robin storyline had at least two films to make it have value (one introducing the Boy Wonder and another dealing with his death) and at least one WITHOUT Robin after that. I can’t see that working.

And Azrael was the WORST part of the Knightfall storyline. All he did was make Batman a joke and make you want Bruce back even faster. It would have been a MUCH better storyline if they brought in a Bat-replacement that we liked so we were conflicted about Bruce coming back. Azrael is a crappy character and I don’t need to see him on film at all.

      1. Both Red Hood and Azrael are great characters. Azrael- the Jean Paul Valley character – had enormous potential in the Knightfall series – He nearly offed Bane in the end, only to realize that he’s not a killer. It’s just after Knightfall that the editorial direction of DC Comics screwed that character. Now, Azrael is portrayed by a black guy that nobody cares for.

Red Hood , on the other hand, also has great potential. The stumbling block is that we’re probably won’t see it happen in theaters coz WB doesn’t want to include Robin in its feature films (as far as Chris Nolan is concerned that is)

Of the two , Red Hood is almost like Bucky Barnes. It will be cool to see a Red Hood live action flick , just as it is to see a Winter Soldier movie.

    1. I’ll admit I was a big fan of the Winter Soldier storyline. Whether it be pretty good or great, it was wildly popular with the comic book crowd in most circles.

I would be excited to see this myself, there were some aspects of Winter Soldier as a ruthless killer that appeal to me. Should make a compelling story, or could if done right.

      1. Not saying it wont make for good cinema, Just to much of a leap from the origin story (assuming their going off the Stan Lee story).

Liked the arc , but I think it should tucked away for later…

then again who really knows how Johnston set this whole thing up….
        We’ll see in a few days…I’m stoked
