Let’s Go To Mars With The New John Carter Trailer

While slightly under the radar for some, Disney’s John Carter Of Mars has a teaser trailer. Ace Showbiz has our Barsoom fix:

The preview offers various heroic footage of a man named John Carter who gets transported to a historic world where he takes part in an epic warship, with a cover of Arcade Fire’s “My Body Is a Cage” by Peter Gabriel being used as the backsound.

Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’s classic novel, “John Carter” tells the story of an American Civil War veteran who suddenly enters a nearly collapse planet Mars (Barsoom), where he then becomes a hero who saves Barsoom from destruction.

Have a look:

While ‘Wolverine’ alum Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins are mostly featured and you get a quick glimpse at one of the aliens, you’ll note you’ll hear Willem Dafoe in the background somwhere, and there is a shot of his character Tars Tarkas being a bit mysterious. You hardly see Tars at all, and only Barsoomsmen in general, from a distance. There’s a good reason for this. While the teaser trailer shows us enough (and very impressive in doing so) we know Tars Tarkas should look something like…this:

So, hats off to Disney for not giving away the farm. Unless that wimpy looking alien in the teaser was Tars, (which on further inspection, I sadly think it WAS) we appear to be in good shape like Kitsch’s six pack and Collins’ curves.

What say you, int’l friends?

  1. Having read “A Princess of Mars” in 1975 and been a die-hard Edgar Rice Burroughs fan ever since, I am very excited to see this one. I think we are in good hands with Andrew Stanton at the helm. Do I expect a literal translation to the screen? No, not really possible given that the source material was written for serial pulp magazines of 1912. However, I do hope that Andrew and company can capture the essence and wonder of Burroughs’ Barsoom (Mars). Fingers crossed on this one. Can’t wait…

  2. I don’t like this teaser. There are some teasers that you watch and say “What the heck, that looks amazing, I can’t wait to see more!” without having any real knowledge of the film, i.e. Inception’s first teaser. Then there are teasers like this one where you just say “What the heck?” One moment we’re in what appears to be Industrial Revolution era America, then some scifi otherwordly setting, then there’s a green alien, then he leaps 40 feet in the air. What?! The premise of the books and film sounds very interesting, and I like the trailer music, but the footage just looks like a random mix of quick shots without anything to help the viewer make sense of it all.

  3. Dejah Thoris has more clothes on her? Sacrilegious! Blasphemy!……….. well, what can i say? It’s “Disney” afterall.
I’m definitely on the fence for this one.

  4. I have to admit I only recently started reading John Carter of Mars comics but I gotta say I am hooked in a seriously big way. The trailer looks pretty darn good to me, will be excited to see this for sure.

I liked the music in the background of the trailer, glad they didnt try the standard heavy metal action tracks. Thought that really brought something different to the trailer.
