Pinnocchio: Del Toro style

Deadline is reporting that Guillermo Del Toro has yet another project with his name attached, and this one may be one of the most interesting as he will be lending his talent and style to deliver us his vision for the beloved Pinocchio.

Guillermo del Toro, The Jim Henson Company and Pathe are ready to go on Pinocchio, a 3D stop motion animated adaptation of the Carlo Collodi fairy tale that will be edgier than the 1940 animated Disney classic. Gris Grimly will co-direct with Mark Gustafson, and production will begin later this year.

And they were nice enough to release some images:

I honestly would expect something like this from Tim Burton before Del Toro but that’s the part that has me intrigued. The pre-production photos have an eerie ‘Burton’ feel to them and I hope that feeling gets resolved as things are further developed. I can’t say that this is something I’d wait in line to see at the theater but the idea of a dark Pinocchio from Del Toro shouldn’t be completely ignored, not to mention that sculpture looks like it needs to be on my desk.

  1. Have any of you read the book? I forget what it’s called, but it’s a Pinnocchio adaptation where our wooden hero beats the cat with his wooden leg (which is why he limps in the original cartoon), and goes to the land of “boobies”, etc.

Again, I forget what the exact title is… but cover art from the book and Del Toro’s rendition of what Pinnocchio looks like, are extremely similar. If Del Toro DOES draw from the book, this film will be “edgier” indeed.

  2. I think it is a great idea. I am in love with Tim Burton so I would’ve liked to see him involved with a project like this. But Del Toro is incredibly talented and creative and completely capable of doing a job well done.
