Val Kilmer returns as Wyatt Earp

Val Kilmer has had a fairly distinguished career portraying various roles in various genre’s with few resonating as well as his depiction of Doc Holliday in the 90’s hit film “Tombstone”. Today we learn that he’s finally going to be returning to the western genre of films as he’s a lock for titular character Wyatt Earp in “The First Ride of Wyatt Earp”.

The film is based on a true story and centers on “an elderly Earp sitting down with a reporter to reflect on the ride that made him a legend, when the young marshal rounded up a posse to track down the outlaw who mistakenly murdered the woman he loved.”

Val Kilmer is an enigma to me, but I respect his talent. There have been few times that I’ve seen him in a role where I didn’t really appreciate his presence and performance especially in Tombstone. I’m presuming his role will be to portray the older, over the hill, version of Earp and maybe they’ll cast a younger look a like for any flashbacks.

I’m curious to see how Hollywood decides to further portray the western genre after Jonah Hex threw up on tarnished the house the 3:10 to Yuma re-built for me.

  1. I liked Costner’s version better, it was more historically acurate. Wyatt was a complex guy who wasn’t a hero in any fashion. He was a bad ass to be sure but most of what he did in business and law were out of selfish interest. Costner’s film revealed some of this and I respect that. The film also did a great job of showing the loyal friendship both Wyatt and Doc had between them. Dennis Quaid played a damn good Doc Holiday in my opinion. Tombstome was just a fancied up Hollywood version that didn’t portray the characters no where near how they were in real life.

  2. I’m surprised they didn’t approach Kurt Russell – as an older Earp. If they were going this way—why not?
I agree with Rodney. The casting is a bit odd.

As for the western genre, Anthony, Hollywood has never been friendly to the genre. But y’know the Cohens redeemed Josh Brolin w/ True Grit!

  3. This is as awkward as if they cast Tom Welling in Superman. He isn’t the person he is hired to play because he played someone CLOSE to that role.

He played a great Doc Holiday, and I dont need to see him as Wyatt. I actually dont WANT to see him as Wyatt.
