We’ve been reporting about this film for a while and I’m still frustrated by how little we actually know about the film. We know all of the cast has returned and that Benedict Cumberbatch was cast as the villain but other than that we know little to nothing. Thank Bob someone behind the film saw fit to provide the internetz with an official synopsis for the film to include with future coverage!
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

Action packed? In a Star Trek film? Don’t get me wrong, the last film did have plenty of action for a film but I wouldnt describe it as “Action Packed” which is the exact omission that I appreciate from the series. Star Trek is for thinkers not for those who want to turn off the brain and watch a film. I don’t believe this film is “doomed” just because of this synopsis, however, it is a very unexpected adjective for the film. Makes me wonder…

Yes! Action, in a Star Trek film – you know, one of the things that made the last one so great?
Action doesn’t intrinsically mean dumbed down, or lowest common denominator, at least it doesn’t have to.
JJ Abrams demonstrated that with his first effort here. He even commented that before this, at it’s best, Star
Trek was “submarine warfare” – he moved it beyond this, in a good way, and I’m happy he did with great success.
The last Star Trek was smart, as well as action packed – I see no reason to change it.
Abrahms seems to know what he’s doing. I don’t imagine he’s going to look at the critical and
financial success of the first film and think “hey, I think I’ll go back to the pure cerebral, submarine
warfare mode of the original series”
As a life long Trekkie, I agree with you that Trek is a “thinkers” game. I was impressed with the first movie. Let’s hope JJ keeps it up, except for that God awful light on the screen glare technique. I can to without that thank you
