Joel Kinnaman describes the look of ‘Robocop’ in reboot

We found out that Joel Kinnaman will portray the titular character in the Jose Padhila directed reboot of the franchise with little other information released, which is understandable because the film is fairly early into its production cycle. Well it seems that Joel Kinnaman could not escape questions regarding the film when recently quizzed on the red carpet and gave us a lot more insight into the development of the look of Robocop than I think any of us would have anticipated. The actor revealed and kinda hinted that Robocops’ eyes will play a much larger part as a characteristic than we’d ever seen in the past with a few choice quotes when asked by MTV to talk about the film:

“There’s a lot of neuroscience now raising the question, ‘Is all the intelligence in the human body in the brain?’ and they’re finding out that, no, it’s not like that. The body has intelligence itself, and we’re much more of an organic creature in that way. It’s not a control tower that does everything.”

“RoboCop is going to be a lot more human. The first movie is one of my favorite movies. I love it. Of course, Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it’s not going to have that tone. It’s a re-imagination of it. There’s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece, for Alex Murphy and especially when he is RoboCop. It’s much more challenging.”

“It’s not going to be jaw action. They’re still working on the suit and how it’s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through. You’re going to see his eyes.”

The film is due to begin shooting in August and Kinnaman also feels it should be rated R.

I sincerely hope they’re going for R ‘cause I can’t imagine how RoboCop could be PG-13. That would be a huge mistake. If I have any say in it, I will fight very hard for it. It has to be violent.

It’s an interesting concept and one that I’m curious to see play out. I’ll be the first one to admit that the Robocop character could use a re-design to modernize him a bit with todays technology. I think my phone is equipped with a faster processor then 80’s Alex Murphy. As such the idea of introducting a see through visor is ok with me and allows Kinnaman a bit more elbow room with regard to conveying emotion while in character. This is all fine with me and not at all something worth fighting against… as long as they preserve the brutality. My hindsight could always be playing tricks on me but from what I remember of Robocop he was not too apprehensive with dishing out the violent punishment when provoked and that’s one part of the character they better not mess with.

Dead or alive, you're coming with me.
