In a recent conversation with Joss Whedon at the SXSW festival it was revealed that neither the Skrulls or the Kree are the villain army in The Avengers. His reasoning for disclosing this information was to prevent the viewers from being disappointed.

“I will say only this: It is not the Kree or the Skrulls.”
“Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories,” Whedon explained. “They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars.”
I have to respect Whedon’s decision on this. When making a film with so many strong leading roles there has to be ample time allocated for proper character development. Even though these characters have been established from their own respective films, the Avengers movie has to maintain a level of independence to captivate an audience that may not know of these characters and have not seen any of the films necessary to establish the characters. Introducing an alien race like the Skrulls or the Kree who have such a large backstory could make character development feel rushed and could hurt the fluidity of the plot. Sorry rumor mill, looks like it’s back to the drawing board…
Love the comments everyone, I’d love see the debate continuing. Check out this post I wrote as a follow-up, I think all of you would enjoy commenting on this and I would love to hear your thoughts.

what if its Hydra powered up by the cosmic cube, since Hydra had advanced technology in Captain America, look back on all the movies leading up to this one, maybe it all fits in the Avengers, Cosmic Cube, Red Skull, Loki, super soldier serum, Hydra, Stark industries technology, can anyone add these up in the Avengers film
Is it possible it could be a technologically armed army of Ice Giants? Same kinda dark bluish skin from what i can c in freeze frames. I see similarities.
Oh!! AND!! Loki is the son of Laufey (or however u spell it) and as Laufey was killed in Thor, albeit by Loki’s hand, he could have returned to Jotunheim and become their leader. I dunno guys, I think I’m on to something!!
thank god I know its the red skull because at the end of catfa he wasnt destroyed he was trapoed to asgard.
He can say it’s not the Kree or Skrulls, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be reasonable facsimile.
With this “bum-shell” of information thrown out there, I’m not looking forward to the Avengers as much. If the big villain is just Loki I’ve got to say I feel the movie is going to be kinda “ho-hum” at best. We’ve seen Loki get thrown around by Thor, why would he need any more superheroes to help him defeat him again?
I felt the same way when the Green Goblin showed up in Spiderman 2. It was completely, “So what? We’ve seen this, move on.”
