Forgive me for a moment because I’m about to discuss something that’s not at all movie related. We all clear? And thanks. Joss Whedon and Marvel have been haveing all sorts of trists in recent months since his handling of The Avengers movie went over monumentally, with his rewards also expected once the film arrives on BluRay and DVD within a few weeks. It appears that Marvel has tasked Whedon with co-writing that show and possibly directing its pilot.
S.H.I.E.L.D. will be written by Whedon and frequent collaborators, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss Whedon also is set to direct the pilot, schedule permitting. Production on the pilot, which marks the first live-action Marvel TV project to get a green light, will start immediately. Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Tancharoen executive produce with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.
This marks a return to series television for Joss Whedon, creator of cult favorites Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse. Husband and wife writing duo Jed Whedon and Tancharoen co-penned with Joss Whedon Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and also have worked on Dollhouse and Spartacus. In addition to S.H.I.E.L.D, Marvel TV has a couple of other projects in development at ABC Studios, including a Hulk series.
The news. to me, is incredibly exciting. I really liked the way that Disney took to Marvel like bee’s to honey. At first when I heard that they dropped like $4 billion on buying out the company I had worried that the brand would be a voiceless irregardless cog in a very large machine. That didn’t happen. Instead the comics have grown into very imaginable directions. Some highs, some lows, but it’s clear that Marvel is trying new things in recent months than what they had done in the past.
That being said with Joss Whedon being a name involved with the television representation of the company that drafted ‘Earth’s Might est Heroes’ and combining them into the supergroup that they are is a very interesting and exciting prospect. Will it tie into Marvel’s cinematic universe? Whedon has done well with Marvel and despite his preference for telling his own stories I have to admit that I very much like the way he adapts with Marvel. I liked his take on the X-Men comics, I liked his Avengers, and I’m going to set time aside o in my schedule to watch this show. DVR be damned.
