I generally felt the blockbuster films you mentioned have improved in quality in every aspect such as story telling and even special effects. Compared to last year, which if I recall, was pretty dire (Pirates 4, Smurfs, Green Latern etc), this year was alot better and I do think your conlusion that studios are putting more thought into it and not just splashing the cash is correct.
