J.J. Abrams WILL Direct Star Wars Episode VII
— Posted by The "Superior" Anthony
I say this with a heavy heart but we’re getting word that J.J. Abrams has officially signed a binding contract and is now legally obligated to direct the announced Star Wars Episode VII for Disney/Lucas Film.
So Abrams will be directing and the internet will be set afire by his non-announcements regarding the film between now and 2015. I don’t like J.J. Abrams. I DONT. That said, I think he’s a really talented director, and I really do belive that he’ll be able to direct an enjoyable Star Wars film. I’m excited to see what he comes up with I just am not at all excited about his preferred “keep it a secret” approach to marketing. Did I mention that they gave him the keys to the thing that i’d like least to be kept a secret? It is sort of a match made in heaven and hell at the same time.

Star Wars is right in his wheel house as far as his talents are concerned. I wonder how much freedom they will give him concerning the script... if Arndt will basically hand over the first draft and then Abrams and his crew will look at it and tweak it or not...
Ahbrams is a good choice. He knows what he's doing.
I think this is probably the best thing that any Star Wars fan could ask for. What Abrams did with Star Trek was take all the great stuff from Star Wars (A New Hope), and apply it. It is all the same things that the prequel trilogy sorely missed. While I don't think Abrams is the best director out there, I do think he is the best director out there to make Star Wars relevant and successful today...
@BeHappyAndStupid I agree that the screenplay is the most important thing but a good screenplay doesn't always make a great film.
With that said, I couldn't be more excited by the choice of Director, great choice in my opinion.
Everyone is so concerned about who will be the the director, while in fact the screenplay is one of the most important and essential parts of the movie. With that in mind, I do like J J Abrams' Star Trek and I think his new film will be also awesome. As for Star Wars 7 - we shall see.
Ha, you beat me to the punch on this. I understand your dislike of Abrams and I think that it's a love/hate relationship I have with him as well because expectations are so high due to his talents. To be honest, I can't think of another director that would make me more excited about the franchise.
If we can get the same effort for the new Star Wars trilogy that we got from Star Trek, I think this could be very exciting times for the franchise (despite the rushed production schedule). I can see some amazing space battles and I have faith in his abilities in sci-fi story telling but I am curious to see how the lightsaber choreography turns out. I'm just glad they finally have a director!
