Premier gets Cancelled

the word Premier means the “first one” the kick off, the start of something. So it sounds weird to say the Premier is at an end. In print anyways. Premier Magazine has been among the pile of entertainment mags that people recognize alongside Entertainment Weekly.

Yahoo News says:

Magazine publisher Hachette Filipacchi is shutting down the U.S. edition of its movie magazine Premiere.

The company, which also publishes Car and Driver, Elle and other magazines, said in a statement late Monday that the April edition of Premiere, which is on newsstands until April 16, will be the last for the U.S. edition. The international editions will continue.

Now this is exciting news for me. Honestly, I hate to hear that any publication is stopping its run. But honestly, the followup news to this cancellation is that they are revamping their website.

They are redirecting their efforts to focus on reporting the entertainment news on the web! At least for the North American audience. Is this a sign of a shift in news? Being that I write here, I tend to be more privy to movie news. When I am out and I pick up a copy of Entertainment Weekly, all that news is OLD. Ok, its only a week old, but I can’t help but think “I wrote about this last week!”

I like the idea that the internet is becoming the sole source for your entertainment fix. One of my favourite blog tags is on a friend’s Livejournal that says “Livejournal: Its faster than CNN”

  1. If I see a back issue of Premiere magazine I buy it so this news is leaving me quite sad.

I’m not sure if I want to see Premiere go the way of Entertainment Weekly.

  2. Going up in rates? It cost me $7.97 to subscribe to Premiere. My subscription goes until 2009… they better send me a refund. I can’t believe that I will no longer have Premiere. Yeah, the net has up to the minute news, but Premiere offered interviews, reviews, and other noteworthy articles. I’m going to miss my monthly fix of it.

  3. Wow Premiere Magazine is through?? I remember reading that magazine in its earlier days and that was my Bible. Then I could no longer afford the subscriptions cuz they kept goin up on the rates. Oh wellz…more room in the industry for indie film magazines….

    J.

  4. It is not a surprise to me. When the magazine first started, they had some diversity in the various genres of film-and some great articles over its near 20 year run. In recent times, with the exception of the power list, they got too fluffy.

I am not keen on the website- will they focus more on say, what Brad Pitt had for breakfast this morning, or will they have articles that will be as good as they had in the late 80 to late 90’s? I doubt it.

  5. i hate the thought of websites taking over from actual physical magazines….hate it hate it hate it

i don’t want to have to print out pages from my computer to take to the toilet!!! although I am kidding on the square as al franken would say i really hope this isn’t a trend that continues…i love magazines and hope that they do not wind up replaced by websites only….

if I am not mistaken, aside from the trades (VARIETY AND HOLLYWOOD REPORTER), the demise of premiere means there is no longer a dedicated movie magazine in america ….. EW is there but that is not just movies…

at least from the u.k. we still have empire and total film…..

  6. im not even kidding when i say this, but i had a check written out and a stamped envelope addressed to premiere that i was going to send in tomorrow.

just great timing. and yeah i did think that the magazine was kind of weak, but i still wanted a movie magazine to come to me monthly. sucks that i think empire is a lot better, but thats from overseas and costs a fortune to subscribe to, and 10$ to buy one at barnes and nobels.

anyways, great freaking timing premiere. at least i didnt send it out yet.

  7. BUT BUT BUT…I BUY THAT MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH. its THE movie magazine for me…i’m looking at one right now..its got marky mark on the cover…it cant stop…they cant take away my fix, poof just like that!

i’m really sad about that, like, why cancel a magazine and only have an internet site?
I can take the magazine with me anywhere but i cant take the internet everwhere.

and the website is free, whats so wrong with producing a magazine that people can buy? grrrrrrrrrrrrr
