With much of Ghost Busters 3 hinging on the entire original cast returning, it seems that Bill Murray is the only person not eager to get on board just yet. He has this thing against doing sequels since the Ghost Busters sequel and doesn’t want to do this one either.

But now it seems he is reluctantly involved and spills a bit about what Dr Peter Venkman might be doing in the film. Dying.

Screenrant shares:

Speaking of which, Weaver made that oddball, off the cuff statement at a press junket for Avatar back in December where she said she thought Bill Murray was going to be in Ghostbusters 3 as a ghost.

Everyone pretty much laughed it off as the ramblings of a drunk old woman (including the studio) but now comes an interview from the website UK Mail Online with Murray and it appears that she may not have been as drunk as everyone thought. Says Murray [SPOILER TIME]:

“I said to [the people involved with the Ghostbusters 3], ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.”

So is this Bill Murray’s trademarked snark coming off here, or is there some validity to it.

As long as he keeps being a ghost, and keeps being Venkman, I think it would work. Having him die might actually kick off the line of thinking that the guys are getting too old for this and that its time to pass the torch to a younger more technologically saavy crew of Busters.

I am ok with that.

Screenwriter of Saw is talking that they are seriously considering writing the seventh chapter as its last, tying together the loose ends and ending the series for good.

/Film says

Screenwriter Patrick Melton, who co-wrote the last three Saw films and the upcoming seventh movie, claims the the series will probably end with the seventh installment, and they have even planned to wrap up the lingering questions.

As noble and artistic as they want to be with Saw ending, I honestly don’t see the studio letting that happen.

These movies rake in serious cash on a regular basis and there is no reason for them to stop now. The die hards will keep watching it and keep putting food on the fat cat’s plate.

I thought the first one was great, but lost interest after 2.

They want to tie it all up, but it wont be over. If there is money to be made with the franchise it will never be over.

Terminators just don’t die. You can kill em, but they just build another one. Judgement Day cannot be averted. We thought it was over with Salvation as it failed to save the franchise from bankruptcy, but after a fierce battle with Sony and Lionsgate over the auction for the rights, it appears that Pacificor, the creditors that put Halycon into bankruptcy in the first place have overbid to lay claim to the corpse.

Obsessed with Film reports:

In the end it was Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor, the debtholder who pushed previous owners Halcyon into bankruptcy. The final bid was said to be $29.95 million, and Nikki Finke has reports that the major Hollywood studios backed out when it became obvious Pacificor weren’t letting anyone else get their hands on the property.

As part of the deal, Halcyon will receive $5 million per every new Terminator movie greenlit, and will keep all future revenue earned from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation.

I find it interesting that the company who forced Halycon into bankruptcy to begin with has become the bidding winners of this property.

Sounds like this was their plan all along. Hostile takeover of sorts.

Now what they might do with the property is unknown. Maybe McG will get his chance to make that Terminator 5 he was bragging about.

I was hoping they would let Terminator fade in its bittersweet history, but with this much cash being tossed around to secure the property, I am sure they will do something with it.

Maybe a musical?

Green Lantern’s supporting cast is shaping up well with Reynolds snogging with Blake Lively, Mark Strong likely playing Sinestro (but Sinestro wont be the villain yet) and Peter Sasgaard playing Dr Hector Hammond.

But now we find out that Tim Robbins has also join the cast.. but as who? Hammond’s dad?

So, that leaves Dr. Hector Hammond, played by Peter Sarsgaard, as the feature villain of the Green Lantern origins movie. We know that Dr. Hector Hammond is “the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father’s eyes” and now we know who’s playing the father: Tim Robbins!

Obviously they were not done considering Robbins, as he was originally being considered for the role of Tony Stark’s father in Iron Man – a role that got glossed over as a cover story in the plot.

Now the inevitable dad will be playing a negative influence this time as the villain will be motivated by insecurity created by his judgemental father who he could never impress. He needs a hug.

I always like Tim Robbins in the roles he plays, but he still looks like Bill Gates to me (which made him perfect for the Gates-esque role he played in Antitrust)

I can’t see his role being all that big in the story considering this will be ALL about Hal Jordan, and the villain will be secondary leaving his dad issues tertiary.

I often defend the originality in film when people say that EVERY film is a remake (you just notice those – there are more original films but you just don’t see them advertised as much) but then Fox goes and does something like this that really doesn’t help my cause.

It seems they are taking the premise of the Jolie and Pitt action film Mr and Mrs Smith and re-envisioning it as Mr and Mrs Jones… and rebooting the movie.

Fused Film says

The site also reports that the new film will be titled Mr. and Mrs. Jones and will not feature the original film’s stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (duh!). This new film will revolve around a younger couple who are set up as a fake husband and wife when they complete their agency training. Slightly different from the 2005 film as it centered on a dull married couple who both lead double lives as assassins without either of them knowing their spouse’s true profession until they are caught up on the same mission.

Reboot? Hardly, this is like the Cruel Intentions sequel or The Skulls sequel. Its a RE-HASHING. Tweaking small parts of the plot and refilming the same movie is hardly a reboot. When the story is this close to its predacessor, its just silly to try and candy coat it with “re-imagining” when they pitch it as basically the same movie. If they manage to pull out something original from the concept, then it might be worth a watch, but it sounds like the same film again.

Apparently the motivation for this recycled film is to “revisit a popular title without the high-priced talent, going with younger, more cost-efficient stars”

And there it is. Like any sequel or reboot (or any film for that matter). Its a cash grab. I predict Direct-To-DVD.

Its a quiet chilly Monday, but at least the sun is shining. And while we are at it, we are delievered a nice flamable log to throw on the fire to fuel the wild speculation that will be the Casting of Captain America.

Collider has gathered all the hints:

– He’s definitely casting an American to play Captain America

– Needs to have casting done by March 1. Says they are testing 5 or 6 guys ranging from 23 to 32.

– He’s shooting Captain America in HD and says if they do 3D it’ll be in post

– Says he’s going to shoot Captain America in a different way than any of the other Marvel pictures have been shot

– They’re going to shoot most of it in the UK because the movie takes place in Europe

– Regarding casting a movie star to play Captain America…Johnston says he wants to discover an unknown and surround him with more prominent names

– The Invaders are in the movie and they’re a big part of the second half of the film. Also The Invaders will be six members strong. (via Chud)

– And while he didn’t tell us anything about the villain of the film, AICN is reporting Johnston told someone at the junket that Red Skull is going to be the villain. More on Red Skull here.

– Steve Rogers (Captain America) will wear two costumes in the film. The first is close to the Jack Kirby designed costume and later in the film he’ll wear a sturdier, more muted version. (via Hero Complex)

Clearly they would be going the safe way and casting an American. I don’t think it HAS to be in order to get the part right, but at the same time, the fanboys and the general film audience would likely have a mental block if a non-american was cast, so to avoid the shitstorm they are playing that one safe. I don’t blame them.

They are filming it “different than other Marvel films”? Vague much? What are other Marvel films all shot like that is in common? I have no idea what he is hintting at here.

The original Invaders was the name given to Cap’s special team of WW2 super soldiers that consisted of his sidekick Bucky, the original android Human Torch, the Torch’s sidekick Toro and Namor the Sub-Mariner. I like the idea that Cap isn’t the only super to be on this elite military team. Later Union Jack, Spitfire and Miss America were added. Who they use from that lineup (if any) remains to be seen, but I suspect we will at least see a Bucky. A number of these could result in their own spinoffs later.

There is also a strong rumour running the gamut this week that Chuck Co-Star Captian Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) might be considered.

While McPartlin has had a lot of scattered work before settling in with Chuck, he is still a mostly unknown and has never been in a feature film. He is awesome though, and looks the part.

So its still anyone’s guess, but that Johnston has given himself a deadline that is only 3 weeks away, I would imagine he has a few names bouncing around in his head. Who knows?

Turner Classic Movies channel is presenting an impressive string of classic films in honour of the Oscars that will span 31 days. The scheduling is designed so that each movie is linked to the next movie in the lineup through a shared actor.

Turner Classic Movies presents:

31 DAYS OF OSCAR will begin Monday, Feb. 1, at 6 a.m. (ET) with Kevin Bacon and James Coco in Only When I Laugh (1981). Coco and Harry Andrews will then be featured in The Man of La Mancha (1972) at 8:15 a.m., followed by Andrews in 55 Days at Peking (1963) at 10:30 a.m. The festivities will continue linking from movie to movie, one star at a time, throughout the month. The final movie in the festival, Diner (1982), starring Bacon, will bring the entire month full circle.

I like how they are linking each film one to another in their broadcast to the previous film. As a frequent player of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game (it is theorized that any actor in Hollywood can be connected to Kevin Bacon in six steps or less) I like that they are starting and ending the string with him.

I like to concatenate films by a common thread, and this is a clever way to organize a heaping pile of films in an unprecedented string of movie connections for a full 31 days of successive classic films.

I just found out about it this weekend, so I missed the first week of it, but the press release of films is impressive. Check out the list at Turner Classic Movies

Turner has also offered me an “Oscar Party Package” that I can share with one of the international friends as a prize!

TCM Oscar Party pack – complete with popcorn, candy, a martini shaker, coasters and more!

How do you win it?

We are going to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon!! You must connect the actor with Kevin Bacon in as few steps as possible. For Example, Julia Roberts has a Bacon number of 1. She stared in Mystic Pizza with Bacon. However Elvis Presley was in Change of Habit (1969) with Edward Asner and Edward Asner was in JFK (1991) with Kevin Bacon. This makes Presley’s Bacon Number of 2.

Here is the Challenge! Daniel Radcliffe

Leave your answer in the comments. The winner will be randomly chosen from those who determines the lowest Bacon Number for Dan Radcliffe will win the prize. You must use your REAL email address commenting to be contacted for the win!

Good luck! And check out the 31 Days of Oscar films on Turner Classic Movies

The hockey ballad Hit Somebody by Warren Zevon has become the subject from which Kevin Smith may make his hockey film about. In the ballad, the story goes that a poor farmboy named Buddy who isn’t good with a puck becomes known as an enforcer which earns him a place on a team from Saskatoon. He struggles with his hockey career as the coach tells him he is there to protect the goal scoring players, but all he really wants is to score a goal – which he does in his final game.

Kevin Smith recent took this song inspiriation and pitched the idea to WB to see if he could get it made into a film, and it looks like for now they are passing on it.

Smith’s own Twitter updates us on the process:

@ThatKevinSmith “What did WB say to Hit Somebody?” Essentially? “That movie requires a needle-threading approach. We make chainsaws here.”

@ThatKevinSmith Understandably, it’s an easier call with a script. So as of 2/24, I gonna start writing HIT SOMEBODY. WB’s in-or-out remains to be seen.

I am to assume that “needle threading” implies a delicate approach to a small market. Which I don’t know is accurate in a feelgood sports film. So as Smith takes his rejected pitch and heads to the drawing board anyways, Hit Somebody may yet see the light of day. Whether its with WB or not, we wont know until he has an actual script in hand to pitch.

I would trust Smith and his respect for Canada’s sport of Hockey any day. I look forward to seeing what he does with it!

Check out the original song.

Interesting trivia: While it is our most popular sport, Canada’s Official Sport is not Hockey as most assume it is. On the books LaCrosse is Canada’s Official Sport.

Here are some of the Movie Trailer TV Spots that aired in the overpriced time slots that were not released beforehand!

Robin Hood:
See, power chords can be performed by an orchestra. And lots of bows and arrows to go along with the traditional story. I’d be more excited about this if it wasn’t the same outlaw story again. I love Robin Hood, and I will likely love this too, but I have seen this story.

Looking delighfully silly and creep at the same time, Alice is an acid trip. They didn’t show much we haven’t already seen though.

I just love that purr that Gemma Arterton has to her voice. Again not much new, but still wanting to see this. Made me forget it was a video game adaptation.

And of course the “trailer” for the short film by Homeaway.com featuring the spokespersons for bad travel planning, the Griswolds.

Good to see the Griswolds and the Wagon again, and I hope that this promotional stunt does lead to a next generation of Vacation films.

There were other planned Superbowl spots that backed out, like Iron Man 2. I wonder what they were saving themselves for? Maybe they would rather wow us with an actual trailer instead of a half minute TV spot. But when?

Thanks for checking out our Heist review.

Genre: Crime Drama
Directed by: Richard Cooper, Rick Jordan
Staring: Rick Jordan, Christian Mendez, Erik David
Released: Febuary 9th, 2010

THE GENERAL IDEA

Erik and David stare down the barrel of a gun, held by a Columbian drug kingpin named Luis. He’s also their boss. When David is caught dealing on the side, the friends are given an ultimatum: pay their debt or be killed. With his life spiraling out of control, Erik must turn to his older brother, K, the leader of LA’s most brutal gang of thieves.

His next big job- the heist of an armored truck-still months away, K chooses to move up the plans to save his kid brother. With the clock ticking, K is forced to push ahead with a crew of dangerous and unpredictable outlaws. The heist goes remarkably smooth, but what started as a clean operation quickly start to unravel. As tempers boil over and the body count begins to rise, K must fight to protect Erik from the trigger-happy maniacs who will do anything for a buck. Will Erik survive long enough to pay off his debt and save his life? No one is safe, and only on this is certain… When the money’s dirty, no one gets out clean.

THE GOOD

The Girlfriend, while completely useless and of no value to the film, did have some nice legs. That’s all I got.

THE BAD

Ok, sometimes there is a such thing as a movie so bad that its good. Vanilla Ice in Cool as Ice is among them. But seriously, it is possible for a movie to be so bad that its bad.

I wont even go into the low production qualities. That is the least of the problems here. The acting? Terrible. The lead, Rick Jordan is also the director and executive producer and is among the worst in this film. How he can be put in a position to direct this movie and that it got a green light is beyond me.

Plot? yeah, that synopsis above is the “official release” information. Luis is a Columbian drug cartel head? News to me. It was obvious that he was some sort of criminal “boss” but damned if I had any clue what kind he was, or what crimes he commited. And K repeatedly says “You know I work alone” but is a gang leader? Yes. An armoured car gets jacked in broad daylight and for about 3 minutes of the film we see some action. That part happens.

Oh, and K has a girlfriend (remember above? I like her legs) and there is an obligatory sex scene with her – ut then they fight and she gets thrown out a second story window to stand up and brush it off like she stumbled. Its revealed that earlier during the heist she was the one taking pictures to blackmail them into giving her a share of the loot and she drops the photos (which no one acknowledges) and goes home expecting her cut. Um… what?

Oh and an old lady gets run down during the getaway. No reason. Never comes up again.

OVERALL

I have always been of the stance that you have no right to an opinion of a film until you have watched the whole film. Which I have. And it was terrible. No redeeming qualities (aside from a nice pair of legs) and a vague plot covered up with a whole lot more of pointless interactions and subplots that never resolve.

So when you are renting movies this week, and nothing you want to see is available, and you see this appealing cover with a hot girl on it, remember if it says HEIST on it.. don’t. That picture? Not even in the film. Not even sure that’s the same girl. Just don’t.

Not even on a dare.

I give Heist a 1 out of 10
