MI:3 Bumped Back, War of the Worlds on the Fast Track

warworld.jpgWell, the mission may not be impossible, but it is at least proving difficult enough that the producers have stuck it on the back burner for the time being. Word is that Tom Cruise wants JJ Abrams – the creator of Alias – to take over for the now departed Joe Carnahan at the helm of Mission Impossible 3 and he’s willing to wait a year for Abrams’ schedule to clear so that he can get him.

So, with Tom suddenly out of work and Steven Spielberg’s proposed Olympic hostage crisis film similarly stalled out the big heads that sign the checks got together and realized that the next film on both of the heavyweights’ slates was their proposed remake of War of the Worlds. And look! It’s not their next film any more, it’s their current one! The Hollywood Reporter and Variety are both reporting tht principal photography for War of the Worlds will begin in November with the film being prepped for a 2005 release with MI:3 now pushed back to 2006.
