This seems to be an ever growing trend. It used to be that big hits on the stage were turned into movies… but lately it’s working the other way around. Apparently Shrek is being geared up for a Broadway Musical. Now, before you start rolling your eyes at this idea, keep this in mind. Two of the best live broadway shows I’ve ever seen have been Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. These films translated VERY well to the stage and gave me two of the most enjoyable evenings I’ve ever spent at the live theater. And really, when you think about it, Shrek is already quite well built to be converted to the stage. The good folks at Cinema Blend give us this:
Worlds are coming together as Dreamworks Animation, Academy Award winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty), and Tony Award winning director Jason Moore (Avenue Q) are all teaming up to bring the successful Shrek to Broadway. Shrek: The Musical will be directed by Moore who’s previous endeavor – the puppet powered hit Avenue Q – won him a Tony award earlier this year. There is no immediate word on plot for the singing green ogre, but from what’s being speculated it will blend elements of both Shrek and Shrek 2 while expanding the Shrek universe.
One of the best lines in the article comes a little later on when they observe that this is just the latest knee to the crotch that Dreamworks has given Disney. Too funny. Personally, I think this is a great idea.
