Academy screeners begin arriving

There’s been some controversy regarding the method of screening for the Academy Awards, in that last year the films were sent out and one panel member gave them away to friends as he had no need of watching them. This caused a general uproar, etc, etc. God knows why.

However, the upshot is that a new system will be designed to give panel members an encoded DVD player on which only the panel DVD’s will play, and vice versa. More expense for no reason, I mean what do these DVD’s contain that the general public aren’t allowed to see, and are you not allowed to give away these DVD’s? Are they supposed to be returned? If not then surely they are the property of the panelist and can be dealt with as they see fit, without copying anything other than a genuine backup copy of course!

So it’s interesting to read in Roger Avary’s Blog about the arrival of the screeners.

Already he has received Kill Bill Vol. 2 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and he raises the question – where is Farenheit 9/11? Why has it not been sent in time for the election? That stinks if that is the reason that it’s not been sent out, but whatever the reason is, there will be a genuine reason for it being late. If you catch me.
