I always love it when a classically trained actor in the Shakespearian tradition takes on a less traditional role. This is REALLY the case here. Sir Derek Jacobi has signed on to play Marcus, the next vampire elder in line to rule after the death of Victor in the upcoming Underworld 2. I already had a lot of anticipation for this project… now that anticipation has shot through the roof! Here’s a hint for movie executives: “Getting a real actor is NEVER a bad idea” The good folks over at Coming Soon chime in with this little tid bit:
Sir Derek Jacobi (Gosford Park) has been cast as the main villain in the studio’s Underworld 2, to be directed by Len Wiseman and coming to theaters on November 23, 2005.
Jacobi will apparently be playing the character of Marcus in the film. The site says that filming on the sequel will start this month in Vancouver. Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman return in their roles from the first film. Jacobi just completed a role in the British comedy Nanny McPhee, starring Emma Thompson and Colin Firth. He’s also appeared in such films as Gladiator and Hamlet.
Good stuff all around. I liked the first Underworld… but I didn’t love it. Still, there was so much good material there that I knew a sequel had the potential to be something pretty special. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
