If nothing else, (and I do mean NOTHING else) Batman and Robin taught us that a getting together a good cast does not necessarily mean you’re going to get a good film. However, it certainly doesn’t hurt. So with that in mind, I find myself quite excited about the news of John Woo’s new project The Battle of Red Cliff, a film that will be based on the novel Romance Of The Three Kingdoms.
And who is it Woo is wooing to his movie? The good folks over at MovieHole give us this:
According to Monkey Peaches, the “Spy Hunter” helmer wants old friend Chow Yun-Fat to play Liu Bei, Jet Li to play Zhou Yu, the favorite general of Sun Quan; Leung Chiu-Wai to play Zhuge Liang, the top advisor to Liu Bei; and Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi to play the Qiao Sisters.
The movie is based on one part of the classic Chinese novel “Romance Of The Three Kingdoms”. It will depict the battle fought with over one million men in 208 AD. During the battle, the joint force of two warlords Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeated the much stronger invading army led by warlord Cao Cao. Shortly after the battle, the Han dynasty officially ended and China split to three kingdoms.
Yikes! Sounds like a good place to start to me! Woo is due for a good one. At least that’s what I’m hoping.
