Ice Cube is one of those guys who I always seem to enjoy when he’s in a smaller supporting role in a film… but when he’s one of the leads always, without exception, disappoints. It looks like “Are We There Yet” is going to be no exception.
To impress a woman, Nick (Ice Cube) offers to drive here children up to Vancouver (Awesome City) to their Mom (the Woman in question. The only problem is that these kids don’t think Nick (or any man) is good enough for their mom and try to put Nick through hell on the road trip.
Hmmm… that sounds almost exactly like Dutch. Oh well, the reviews are in folks… and while they aren’t the worst I’ve seen this month (cough… Elektra… cough cough), they’re still pretty darn bad. Here’s what the critics have to say:
“You think, Hey, these kids have put Nick through every conceivable indignity except kicking him in the groin! Then, sure enough, one of them kicks Nick in the groin.”
— Phil Villarreal, ARIZONA DAILY STAR“We all saw the trailers and commercials, so we should have known better than to have high expectations. ”
— Willie Waffle, WAFFLEMOVIES.COM“The type of fluff usually reserved for the likes of Tim Allen or a post-Nutty Professor Eddie Murphy.”
— Nicholas Schager, SLANT MAGAZINE“Will the audience follow Ice Cube on this road trip to benign banality? Here’s hoping he books a nonstop return ticket.”
— Owen Gleiberman, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
I don’t say this very often… but I think I’ll skip this one. You can read more critics (much of the same) reviews over at rottentomatoes.
