Matt Damon returns in The Bourne Ultimatum

The Bourne Identity movies have been pretty good so far. Notice I didn’t say “great”. Don’t get me wrong, they’ve been pretty good, but when I left the theatre for both movies I felt a little let down… like they could have been much better.

Knowing that they could have been better has me excited at the news that Matt Damon has officially signed up and the wheels are in motion for the third installment – The Bourne Ultimatum. The good folks over at Moviehole give us this:

“We’ll probably do that in about a year and a half,” he says. “We’re all signed on in principle, in the sense that we’ve all agreed that we want to do it, but we’re not going to do it unless we have a great script. It’s ours to lose at the minute, and if we do make a third one, we want to make it as good as the first two. And if we can’t do that, then we’re going to have to let it drop.”

The character from the books, Carlos the Jackal, was taken out of the first film, and Damon says he won’t be in this one either. “Yeah, all that stuff with Carlos being actually caught. It’s kind of a Cold War story. We’re essentially retaining the title, so it’s going to be called ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’. But we don’t know at this point what the hell that means! So if you have any ideas for a script, then please…”

Hmmm… maybe they’re not as far along as many people thought. But here’s somthing funny that struck me. If Damon has “signed up”, then he’s got no say anymore if they’re going to make the film no matter if it’s a good or bad script. Why do actors think they should have any creative control at all? Hmmm… there’s a topic for another post.
