We all know the time is coming when full length feature films will be available for download legally. The only question remaining is which company will take the first step to really get the ball rolling. There have been a few companies that have made noise about making this move… but so far nothing has really yes come into existence other than sites that allow you do download… but have VERY limited rights attached an don’t let you actually store the movies on your hard drive.
That could all be changing with a company in the UK called Wippit, a business that already offers music downloading. The BBC news offer us this:
Wippit, which already sells music downloads, has announced plans to provide movies that users will be able to keep, from this summer onwards. Some US sites offer films which can be downloaded legally for viewing within a time limit but cannot be stored.
Wippit founder Paul Myers said: “We are in talks with distributors and hope to provide new movies at the time of DVD release or shortly afterwards.” Mr Myers added: “As far as we know, we will be the first to fill the gap.”
Sounds good to me. Let’s see if this actually turns into something or is just more hot air. You just know that once 1 company actually takes this step, TONS more will (just look at how many companies started offering music downloading once iTunes got going).
