In an interview for the UK online newspaper, Times Online, Robert Carlyle talked about his career and where he hopes it will go, and in doing so talked of his next project.
a new project from 4Way productions, the company Carlyle set up with Welsh, the Ravenous director Antonia Bird and the film critic Mark Cousins. The Meat Trade is inspired by Burke and Hare, the two Irish immigrants who dug up bodies for medical research in 19th-century Edinburgh. “The modern twist is that the bodies are fresh and they are going to a clinic in Edinburgh that sells off kidneys to Saudi Arabia for quick transplants,” he explains.
Fantastic. Edinburgh has some amazing stories that could be told on the big screen, indeed some of those already told are worth a remake. The old city, the vaults, Mary Kings Close,…If only.
Still, this is a great tale to bring to modern times, although I doubt we’ll see it made in the UK if the current Government continue taxing it to hell. So what part will Carlyle play?
“I play Alex, who√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a f****** nutter,” he grins. “He’s a realistic Begbie, who’s going down the road of real psychosis.”
Although he says he would prefer to play more nice guy roles, this is what he does best, and with the story carrying some great creatives, this has great promise. For me though, his best role was in Cracker as the psychotic football fan, the closing moments of that show were some of the best on film I have seen.
