The Descent looks like one of those films that has a really interesting plot for a great character driven film… and then all of a sudden… BOOM!!! They go hurling off in a totally different direction! Not that the differnt direction is nessessarily a bad thing… but it seems like it.
At first, the film seems to be one of those “Holy crap what the hell are they going to do!?!” movies. You know, like Open Water or Daylight… where the movie revolves around a group of characters finding themselves in a next to impossible survival situation. In this case, it’s a group of 6 girfriends who go on an annual deep caving trip… only to find themselves trapped deep in the earth after a rockslide. Sounds pretty good… but then out of nowhere they hit you with:
Left with no other option, they push on through the cave, praying for another exit. The women battle through this harsh underground world, pitting their strength and determination against each new challenge. Unbeknownst to them, there is something else lurking under the earth, a race of monstrous creatures hidden from the light, evolved to live perfectly in the dark. As the friends realize they have become prey, they are forced to unleash their most primal instincts to face the creatures. As old wounds break open and loyalties disintegrate, the women realize the horrible truth-they have most to fear from one another.
I’m sorry… did that just say “a race of monstrous creatures”? Didn’t see that coming. I don’t know, in all fairness the trailer does look pretty good and if nothing else it has caught my attention. You can go give the trailer a look here.
