I saw this trailer ages ago and it caught my imagination immediately. Having read the book and been equally engaged and frightened by the film The Serpent and the Rainbow, I realised that the subject of voodoo is one of those remaining scares that carries across so many people and countries and yet has remained largely untouched on the big screen. With the movie The Skeleton Key the subject is brought back to life once again.
Firstly, I have to vent a small frustration, and it may just be down to semantics, but it still annoys me. The trailer opens with the words “from the writer of The Ring”. Well now, that would be the screenwriter of the adapted screenplay from the original novel which was written by Kôji Suzuki. So Ehren Kruger is the screenwriter who adapted the book for the screenplay. Right, finished, let me continue.
The trailer looks quite decent actually, and although you get most of the movie from it – what trailer doesn’t nowadays – it does look like a good attempt at a slow creeping feer of a movie. Starring John Hurt and Kate Hudson it does carry some weight. I think combining Krugers skills with the Japanese influence and the largely untouched horror of voodoo might just provide a decent horror flick. Check out the trailer.
