A little while ago we talked about the remake of Don’t Look Now and the views on that were pretty negative.
It also seems that the views from those involved with the original are mixed, from IMDB:
Viscountess Tessa Montgomery of Alamein, the daughter of Daphne Du Maurier, who wrote the short story on which the original movie was based, told the Telegraph that she thought the idea of a remake was pointless and that her mother would have been appalled by the idea of sex scenes being added to the story. Chris Bryant, who co-wrote the original screenplay, told the newspaper. “I don’t accept this argument that you have to remake films for a new generation. … After all, we don’t keep repainting the Mona Lisa for every new generation that comes along.”
That’s actually an interesting point, but countered by the original Director:
But Nicolas Roeg, who directed the first film, indicated that he would be interested in seeing how the story is reinterpreted. “An artist can also paint the same model over and over again and still find something new to say with each picture,” he said.
Damn, a very good rebuttal…However, the artist usually picks one piece of work for display, the rest are often discarded and thrown away. If you think on the works of art there are how many have multiple versions for viewing intended by the artist? I think the weight of this arguement is against Roeg.
Okay, but what’s being messed with? Now here’s a warning for those who haven’t seen the original. Here follows spoilers, turn away now.
…intend to eliminate the murderous dwarf who stalks the streets of Venice, set the film in summer rather than winter, and introduce additional love scenes.
Eh? Remove the Dwarf? Okay the setting doesn’t bother me much, but the Dwarf? That’s the integral part of the story, change that and the story doesn’t relate to the original at all. I can understand why they need to add more love scenes though, the single love scene in the movie was famous, and they’ll either have to top it by having lot’s of sex, or not try it. By the sounds of this rubbish they’ll have to go all Showgirls to attempt anything decent out of this. Geez, I’m angry…No Dwarf?!
