20th Century Fox came in at number one for total summer boxoffice earnings, beating their record net from 2004 and showing everyone that the overly budgeted action flick was still the big kid in town. The Hollywood Reporter gives us the breakdown from each of the top distributors and the films which produced the highest numbers -regardless on how good they were-. Fox did have difficultly with a few summer flops like Kingdom of Heaven and Rebound but humongous blockbusters like Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith brought Fox well above the rest.
Most prognosticators expected George Lucas’ final chapter in the six-picture “Star Wars” saga to shatter scores of boxoffice records. And “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” did just that, entering the marketplace with a bang, breaking the biggest single-day gross in history with its $50 million opening-day take May 19 on its way to a $379.8 million summer haul.
I’m not going to bash Star Wars but some of the titles on the list of successes are those that have been downplayed by many critics and fans. We complain when movies are just the same old crap and tricks being shoved down our throats, but yet the numbers show that the seats are still filling with asses -pun intended-. Fomulas have been discussed on The Movie Blog many times and this is a perfect example of why production companies stick to formula projects – because they make a shit load of money!
